Default Smokeless tobacco

If anyone thought there was no harm in using smokeless tobacco, just ask Tony Gwynn:

http://eye-on-baseball.blogs.cbsspor...97882/34838427

Gwynn, the baseball coach at San Diego State, was diagnosed with cancer in his mouth in August of 2010. He's blamed the cancer on his smokeless tobacco habit. Gwynn used smokeless tobacco for his entire 20-year big-league career and beyond. However, he said he has not used since his 2010 surgery.

I used to work with a director who chewed tobacco during shows. He used to spit into a coffee cup. It was truly disgusting.

Hell, when I started in the "biz", some 30+ years ago, we had people in the newsroom who did just that!

I dipped Skoal and chewed plug tobacco trhough college and grad school.

5 1/2 years.

I knew I couldn't do that in the professional world so I tried to quit. Used cigarettes to help kick the habit. (I had smoked several time in high school and never had a problem quitting when soccer season rolled around). But this time took me 11 years to quit smoking.

Now, should I be sentenced to die, I would chew again and smoke the occassional Cuban. But since I don't want/plan to die soon... I forego such pleasures.

(Root, you'll appreciate this. I got started chewing Levi Garrett when we went to College Park for a MD game and they were handing out packs of Levi... the WVU guys were getting all the packs they could from girls etc. (except the women's rubgy players who chewed Levi themselves) then the MD fans started throwing their packets at us... We were yelling "Thanks, throw more!" Levi plug is still my favorite.)

Seeing I played baseball for 23 years, I abused the habit for decades. Maybe I am a lucky one. I quit for years and then about six years ago, had to drive back up to DC overnight and picked up a tin. Hooked all over again. Studies show it is as addictive as cocaine. I've been off of it for a year now. I have never shown symptoms of cancer or any decay. I didn't dip continually like many major leaguers, but I still get checked every six months.

I dipped/chewed in the newsroom, in the news truck. Heck, hurricanes were a dip-o-rama.

And Tripe, we had AGR fraternitity across the street from mine. Half of those farmer boys were skoal reps. i got it for free.

Again, it is a true addiction and so tough to crack. For those interested in quitting the demon itself, take a look at this site. It truly helps. Rootboy is on there as well.

Did anyone think it was harmless to begin with?

You are chewing a plant product. Not much different from salad... and when I started there were NO HEALTH WARNINGS on smokeless tobacco.

Now we know differently.

Agreed. more than it being a plant though are the poisons put in them for some unknown reason. My guess is straight tobacco is less risky than the finsihed product. I remember drying out tobacco leaves and rolling them like cigars. It really didn't work.

Well if this thread had been posted 18+ years ago I wouldn't have asked...

A couple of friends of mine chew tobacco and swallow rather than spit.

Over the years I've known people who chewed. They always said there was no danger, since they didn't smoke.

I always picture RBS as a cigarette smoker who quit a zillion years ago and Tripe as an occasional-stogie kind of guy. Never would've guessed either of you had ever been chaw-ers. So... Happy Valentine's Day, guys:

I did smoke from age 15 to 31, but I've always thought chewing was disgusting.

Only tried smokeless once, and that was enough. They were handing out free samples at a Yankee game (yes, I'm that old) and my friend and I decided to try them out as we headed home. Naturally, traffic was insane and that was a hellish ride as we struggled to spit/not swallow/salivate without throwing up (insert Dyckerson joke here). Haven't had the hankerin' for it ever since.

I do enjoy the occasional cigar, though. And tonight, a good friend is bringing over some Cubans - never had one before. What should I expect?

A rich, smooth smoke with no harsh sensation that a typical Swisher will give you.

I'd love to have a cigar when I go golfing next month with some friends, but I won't. It's like an alcoholic saying he is just drinking beer. So I will jjust drink beer!!
