Oscar Hosts

...in 2011 will be James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

This is a head-scratcher. While both are very fine actors - they both could get nominations and Franco is considered an early Best Actor favorite - neither are what I would consider "compelling" reasons to watch the show. There's no "I wonder what will happen" factor.

I was kinda thinking they'd get Conan O'Brien. There'd be a curiosity factor, and he did a good job hosting the Emmys a few years ago.

You aren't the demo they're targeting. We had old-school last year with Baldwin/Martin. Time for something new. Franco and Hathaway are each bright and funny enough to deliver the same kind of generic Oscar zingers -- and maybe reel in some younger viewers.

A tougher call is finding Oscar-worthy flicks this year. So far, nothing's really made a mark...

You're right, I'm not the target demo. That's why I thought it would be O'Brien. Have you seen his TBS demos? Average age of his viewers is something like 34. Compare to Leno and Letterman; the average age of their viewers is mid-late 50's. Stephen Colbert would also have been an interesting choice, for the same reason.

This is not to take anything away from either Franco and Hathaway. I've seen them both in interviews and, you're right, both are bright and witty. And Hathaway is strikingly beautiful. It might be interesting to see an Oscar winner coming from the wings rather than from the audience.

No, I don't think O'Brien is a good choice. This year.

I'm looking forward to Oscar season, especially "The King's Speech" where buzz has Colin Firth landing the Oscar he's been deserving for years. "Black Swan" seems to be getting the same read for Natalie Portman, who, like Hathaway, seems to be great in anything these days. And everything Christopher Nolan has made has been memorable, so maybe "Inception" gets him an Oscar this year. And while "Toy Story 3" was lame in my book (Especially after having to pay 3-D prices) it's likely to get a nomination with the new expanded field. The best movie I've seen so far this year remains "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," which really needs no English language remake and should get serious consideration come Oscar time.

There were plenty of flicks I've seen this year that also could deserve to be remembered come Oscar time, but won't. "Valentine's Day" showed what a great director Gary Marshall can still be. And I loved the blink-if-you-miss-it cameo of Julia Roberts as a botoxed morning show anchor. Hilarious. It would be nice to have voters remember Russell Brand from "Get Him to the Greek" since he was pitch-perfect, especially in the wistful, serious moments. And Annette Benning was great again in "The Kids Are All Right."

The Academy and ABC have been trying to adjust the show for years to nudge the ratings. They still need to fix the songs category, and tighten up their treacly VO presentation of the best picture nominees. And my vote is still out on having the "This Is Your Life" profiles of actor and actress nominees. They'll probably revisit the stand-up intros from the mid-audience stage, which was pretty cool. But even if younger demos are usually the target for other shows, it really doesn't matter with the Oscars. Which makes Hathaway and Franco a nice compromise...

I didn't realize 80s erotic thriller rip-offs were Oscar worthy. That's good to know.

This Franco guy, I thought he was still dead.

Colbert and Tina Fey would have made a good pair.

Yes, I've seen it. I'm glad you were able to recognize such a spot-on analysis. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the movie, but Oscar? No way.

I got nothing. I don't really watch movies or care about them. There was one movie about a few Monarchs I like. They were Queens.

From what I'm now seeing, it seems "Dragon" and Rapace are technically a year out to qualify for this year's Oscars anyway. Still one of the best flicks I've seen the last year, and it's hard to see how an English-language version, supposedly with Swedish accents, is gonna be much better.

Mara believe it or not is also getting Oscar buzz for her role in "The Social Network."

I hereby predict that James Franco will begin the show by explaining why he was chosen as co-host -- because he was in a movie titled "127 Hours, which is just about how long this show usually lasts."

I also predict at least five wardrobe changes for Anne Hathaway, who can wear anything and look amazing. She will not wear a meat dress.

A has-been with a mega-hit prime time show.

And I think she's at LEAST as funny as Anne Hathaway. I'd watch the Oscars if she was one of the hosts.
