Did anybody watch "The Best That Never Was" on ESPN's "30 for 30"? It's the story of Marcus Dupree. I always thought Dupree was kind of a spoiled brat, but he didn't come off that way at all in the documentary. I was also kinda surprised how at peace he seemed to be with his life now. It reminded me of those folks who win the lottery and it totally screws up their life. Then, once the money is all gone, everyone leaves them alone and they go back to being happy.

I caught part of it. It looked very interesting. Can't wait to see the rest. Every 30 for 30 I've seen so far has been great. I thought "Once Brothers" (I think that's the title) was great. It's about Divac and the other members of the Yugoslav basketball team.

So far, June 17th, 1994 is still my favorite of the ones I've seen.

Dupree still came across as immature. He led a spoiled life in Philadelphia in that his coaches didn't have to instruct or anyone had to tell him "no." He gets to Norman and never gets a serious talk from Switzer or anyone else where they say "Son, you've got a ton of natural talent, but this is the next level. Your talent will get you 75%-80% there, but it's our job to get you that last 20%-25%, so please listen and follow what we have to say." People forget, and Switzer very lightly alludes to this, but this was still a time where seniority (not talent) mattered in NCAA athletics. It wasn't very long before this that freshmen didn't compete at the varsity level at any sport (see also Maravich, Pete; Chamberlain, Wilt).

I was at the game where he stiffed armed the Kansas DB at @ the 15 (clip included in "30 for 30"). What was just as impressive was his speed. It appeared at least two defenders had clear angles on him but no. I remember leaving that game thinking I'd never seen a back like Marcus. Gale Sayers may have been better, only because he lasted longer.

realize this is an old thread, but "The Two Escobars" was a helluva doc. Had no idea what that team was dealing with heading into the 94 world cup.
