Default Climate Change Summit? Better take the limo.

I had to chuckle over this.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/cop...edges.html?=no

An excerpt:

Quote:
Ms Jorgensen reckons that between her and her rivals the total number of limos in Copenhagen next week has already broken the 1,200 barrier. The French alone rang up on Thursday and ordered another 42. "We haven't got enough limos in the country to fulfil the demand," she says. "We're having to drive them in hundreds of miles from Germany and Sweden."

And the total number of electric cars or hybrids among that number? "Five," says Ms Jorgensen. "The government has some alternative fuel cars but the rest will be petrol or diesel. We don't have any hybrids in Denmark, unfortunately, due to the extreme taxes on those cars. It makes no sense at all, but it's very Danish."

The airport says it is expecting up to 140 extra private jets during the peak period alone, so far over its capacity that the planes will have to fly off to regional airports – or to Sweden – to park, returning to Copenhagen to pick up their VIP passengers.
LOLZ.

Well you really can't bike or drive a tin can to Sweden. So you might as well go with the next best thing.

Yeah -- a giant spit of Copenhagen chewing tobacco sent the peninsula shooting northward. Stockholm is fuming.

Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland...they are all pretty much the same place. Full of Vikings and women with tempers.

I can't seem to find one on such short notice. Would you mind sharing your limo with me if I share use of the small private jet I reserved for the event?

I guess I'm a loner on this, but I really have no problem with our elected and appointed using limos for international conferences. They are some of the highest-ranking members of the American community and shouldn't be expected to drive around in little pretend-cars.

But you'd think they would WANT to set an example to others, sad sack.

Judas H Priest!

Do you think that you might be a loner? Wonder why. Get your damn head screwed on and smell the coffee.

Perception is reality. They don't really give a damn.

Remember when all the US auto execs flew into DC on private jets to plead poverty to the Congress?
They could have flown first class just that once, but nooooooooo.

This is the same kind of thing, but exponentially worse.

Doesn't anyone understand that this is NOT a summit about what individuals can do. It is about what a country's public policy should (or should not) be.

Now if this was a gathering of people sharing ideas about what an individual can do, you may have a point. But that is not what this is.

"Damn" head? Leave my head out of this. You don't know anything about my head. And what does the aroma of fresh coffee have to do with international leaders driving limos instead of Gore-cars?

Ah, see, now you're jumping to baseless conclusions. Somebody (and I'll bet he or she arrived in a black, shiny limo) must care. The cars these folks arrived in have nothing to do with their feelings or political positions. They're useful as ammunition to those who oppose the gathering and subject matter (or Obama) in the first place, I suppose, but as an indication of their degree of interest in the issue, nah, not so much. If your position is they would have been MORE interested if they had arrived in a Gore-car, I'll need a little more proof.

And it's highly possible, probably probable, that if the U.S. delegation would have wheeled up in the tiny, tiny little sun-cars and parked them among the hordes of stretch limos, NY'rr and others (maybe even you, perhaps) would have pissed all over themselves while bleating the obviously phony, politically motivated president was making us look bad in front of the rest of the world, trivializing the role of the U.S. in the hopes of snagging praise from his liberal base.

Much ado about nothing. Bad PR, sure, but that's about it. It had no impact on anyone beyond headline writers and had zero affect on the testimony and the subsequent bail-out monies. It just didn't look good.

How so? Expotentially worse to whom? Those who already oppose Obama? Why do you care?

That's not the purpose of this particular summit.

According to the article, 5 of them are. The other 1,195 of them are not.

And then you have the private jets, many of which can't park locally, so they have to fly out of the country and then back to pick up their passengers. Hmmmmmm....

Here's the point - if this summit is really about what countries can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions then they really aren't off to a great start if the people who have all these "great ideas" can't even figure out how to get to the summit without needlessly wasting thousands of gallons of fossil fuel. What's wrong with flying first class into the country and pulling up in a shuttle van or alternative fuel vehicle? Never mind the fact that the local right wing yutzes would go into convulsions if the US contingent showed up in Smart Cars, I think that would send the message that we're finally getting serious about the environment instead of sweeping it under the rug to please our rich oil buddies like the last administration did. Would it really make a difference in this instance? Not really, no. But the saying "couldn't hurt" comes to mind.

Any way, I just thought it was funny that all these supposedly green advocates who want to save the planet couldn't even be bothered to carpool to the summit, which is why I shared this story.

I'll believe this is a crisis when the people claiming it's a crisis start acting like it's one.
