Manhattan's Meatpacking District is just north of the West Village and south of Chelsea.

Being on an expense account really helps take the sting out of bad food and service.

I've had so many medicore meals and they have all come from chains.
The best meals I've had were all at locally owned joints we stumbled upon or had people steer us to.

Red Robin Burgers - so crappy, and they're expanding. For a truly great fast food burger chain hit up 5 Guys on the East Coast and In-N-out in Cali.

Wouldn't someone need to recommend Applebees for it to be "overrated?" I had no idea it was even "rated." I avoid all those places (Applebee's, TGI Friday's, Outback, anyplace that has Waitron Uniforms.) There is always a better local option to a chain.

Speaking of which - Morton's has to be the most overrated Steak House chain ever. The Palm is bad enough, but at least they have some good food. Ruth's Chris has better steaks, cooked better, and is ~20% cheaper than Morton's, IMHO.

Charles Vergo's Rendezvous in Memphis. Was there last summer and the food was nothing like it was 'back in the day'. Ribs, chicken both dry as a bone.

Red Robin is weird. The burgers look really good, not just in the commercials but also when they sit it on the table in front of you. But then you bite into it, and it's just sorta... not good. I've been twice, and both times I was left vaguely dissatisfied and couldn't put my finger on why.

These are not "joints," but I found both The Four Seasons and Tavern on the Green highly overrated. The food was good, but it wasn't worth the price. And it wasn't just the price that put me off; the Inn at Little Washington was more expensive but worth every penny.

I used to be a fan of Ruth's Chris, until I ate at Jamil's in Tulsa. I can't help but compare them now, and I'm always disappointed at Ruth's Chris. Every time we go to Ruth's Chris or Shula's, the conversation always gets around to making a special trip out to Tulsa for a REALLY good steak.

@TVMatt: It's too bad you always refused to enjoy the fare at that most awesome bar & grill on the UES. It's the best place in the world.

Also, Nathan's hot dogs was a disappointment, EXCEPT for the one at Coney Island. I kept hearing about how good Nathan's was, and I just wasn't impressed at all. Then I was at Coney Island and happened to walk past the Nathan's out there. The food at that one store was completely different from everywhere else and much, much better.

Speaking of Jersey Turnpike vittles (like Nathan's) - I think Sbarro pizza might be the worst "food" I have ever had to pay for.

The McDonald's in Barstow. Sure, because it has a theme to it and stores attached it might seem like more than just a McDonald's...but the food tastes just the same as it does at a regular one.

...Okay, maybe not a great example.

Nothing on the UES is "the best place in the world".

Having actually driven through Barstow a couple of times I have to agree.

Is The World (the former WWF New York) place or whatever it became after McMahon sold it still around in New York City or has it closed up shop?
