John McCain was training in his AD-6 Skyraider on an overcast Texas morning in 1960 when he slammed into Corpus Christi Bay and sheared the skin off his plane's wings. McCain recounted the accident decades later in his autobiography. "The engine quit while I was practicing landings," he wrote. But an investigation board at the Naval Aviation Safety Center found no evidence of engine failure. Mishaps mark John McCain's record as naval aviator Three crashes early in his career led Navy officials to question or fault his judgment. A Times review of his record suggests he was cocky, occasionally cavalier and prone to testing limits. By Ralph Vartabedian and Richard A. Serrano, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers 6:49 PM PDT, October 5, 2008 John McCain was training in his AD-6 Skyraider on an overcast Texas morning in 1960 when he slammed into Corpus Christi Bay and sheared the skin off his plane's wings. McCain recounted the accident decades later in his autobiography. "The engine quit while I was practicing landings," he wrote. But an investigation board at the Naval Aviation Safety Center found no evidence of engine failure. The 23-year-old junior lieutenant wasn't paying attention and erred in using "a power setting too low to maintain level flight in a turn," investigators concluded. The crash was one of three early in McCain's aviation career in which his flying skills and judgment were faulted or questioned by Navy officials. In his most serious lapse, McCain was "clowning" around in a Skyraider over southern Spain in late 1961 and flew into electrical wires, causing a blackout, according to McCain's own account as well as those of naval officers and enlistees aboard the carrier Intrepid. In another incident, in 1965, McCain crashed a T-2 trainer jet in Virginia. --- Maybe he was just showing that same judgment went he decided to try to put a nasty little bimbo up for VP |

According to a military friend, three downed planes usually required grounding of the pilot. Quite handy that McCain's father was high ranking Navy, yeah?

I am surprised that article doesn't try to blame the Forrestal accident on McCain too. |

That article posted above is mild compared to the damning 10 page article on The Rolling Stone website. I've yet to read the entire thing, but, wow, it's quite unflattering.
Here you are http://www.rollingstone.com/news/cov..._mccain/page/1 I've gotten to page 4 before being pulled away. |

I'm shocked that Rolling Stone would have a negative article about McCain.

A lot of that shouldn't be a surprise to too many people considering it seems that the primary source for the article is John McCain himself (via his book). Also, lots of quotes from people who knew/know him and certainly wouldn't have any kind of agenda (like ZOMG I'm in Rolling Stone!). None the less, worth the read, even though reading this would be pointless. Articles like this one and the one 2:30 posted are for people who already aren't voting for him. People who are won't change their minds. Ironically, (as Kace kind of played upon) this same type of report, in a conservative magazine done on Obama would/will be decried as rubbish by the very same people who would run around waving this report. ![]() (Full disclosure, I am unlikely to vote for him, even before this.) |

The guy uses the c word on his wife?
If I didn't think he was a troll before, that would do it, all by itself. "During his 1992 campaign, at the end of a long day, McCain's wife, Cindy, mussed his receding hair and needled him playfully that he was "getting a little thin up there." McCain reportedly blew his top, cutting his wife down with the kind of language that had gotten him hauled into court as a high schooler: "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you ****." Even though the incident was witnessed by three reporters, the McCain campaign denies it took place." (Note - the **** is a Medialine insertion. The original article has the word itself.) You think somebody might have an axe to grind in the midst of a presidential election? As to flying records: Does anyone here know about one of our other well known aviators? He almost failed flight school and in fact was sent back not once but three times for remedial training. This, despite the fact he learned to fly as a boy in Ohio. He also got shot down in Korea, and lost another plane because of mechanical failure. The investigating board on that crash couldn't verify his claim of mechanical failure. In his flight test career, he has the distinction of putting a fighter jet down in mud and getting it stuck there while his passenger, one General Chuck Yeager, laughed hysterically in the back seat. Later on, he crashed a multi-million dollar training vehicle after less than 45 seconds of flight, ejecting at the last moment to see the aircraft fall and burn about 600 feet away. Our terrible, incompetent pilot's name? Neil Armstrong. (and you can verify all that I've written in his authorized biography, in which he recounted those stories to Dr. James Hansen at Auburn University.) The moral: lots of accidents happened in the early days of aviation, some the fault of the pilot, some a result of the vehicle itself. Just because a guy lost an airplane doesn't mean it was necessarily his fault or that he was incompetent. I seem to recall a couple of Dems who also flew fighters and lost them, an nobody tossed mud at their records. It shows how far this election cycle has deteriorated into nothing more than an unsavory crapfest, and I'm sick of it.

After reading about McCain's less than stellar record in the cockpit, I'm wondering if it was the US Navy, rather than the NVA who shot him down. The Navy may have been just trying to keep him from ruining another half dozen or so planes before his Daddy finally decided Johnny just wasn't a very good pilot.

Especially when one is being paid in some way to spread it.

I seem to recall a prominent Democrat awhile back who wasn't able to get his little PT boat out of the way of a huge Japanese ship. I forget his name...John F. something...

Most of the planes that McCain wrecked were not victims of his trying to defeat the enemy... more like his bad flying during routine or training missions. Only the last crash involved enemy action (unless my theory holds true that the Navy shot him down to keep him from flying again).

Many years later, when President, Kennedy was answering questions from some students who had won a tour of the White House.
"Mr. President, why were you a war hero?" "It was involuntary. They sank my boat."

Wow, you conspiracy theorists must be tired of getting your 9/11 theories shot down, so now it wasn't the NVA that shot down McCain, just because he had earlier crashes in his career.
What's next, the whole POW thing never happened? I mean, c'mon, people. It's just a 2:30 thread...let it go.
