What typically is an agent's commission for a reporter with 10 to 15 years experience?

Depends on the agency. Usually 5-10%.

NEVER pay more than 8%. Some agencies will tell you 10% is what all their clients pay and it wouldnt' be fair to charge you any less. It's both LAME and a lie.
If you have that much experience, and you're good, you should pay 5-8% based on your current income and earning potential. |

Regardless of what any particular agent charges, it's almost always far too much. Why? Because agents get paid continuously over the life of your business relationship regardless of how much actual work they do.
Should they be compensated for helping you find a job and/or negotiating your contract -- absolutely. But, should you keep paying them month after month, year after year, renewal after renewal (if the stay at the same station long-term)? Uhh... no. there are better ways, and i truly believe that the people that have hired me to negotiate their contracts would agree. before you hire ANY agent, think about whether it's what you really need. best of luck. |
