Cool

I read this whole thing, and I'm still hungry.

If I was a thinker, I woud say something on topic like, "perhaps the difference between today's recession and the last one is how much information and misinformation is out there. Think about it: in 1978, there were three networks. Most stations didn't do nearly as much news. And of course, there was no internet.

Now, some markets have news on six different stations, there are a half-dozen cable networks blurring the bias line, and rumors get turned into fact with a couple of taps on a computer keyboard. This gives every lawmaker a spotlight to carry around. Every move is closely watched. If there is a misstep away from the base, a hundred talking heads will descend like a flock of Furies."

But, I'm not sure I'm a thinker on Peggy Noonan or Obewan's level.

Obie's the typical ignorant conservate ass you see at teabag events. He comes in here, calls us all idiots and then whines and cries about what a mean, hateful liberal I am when I tell him that since he thinks we're all idiots he'd be better off posting elsewhere. What else should I say? You can't debate with someone who won't even listen to you.

The bottom line is that people like Obie ARE the problem. They are content to sit on their butts and contribute complaints all day long but when pressed for a solution to ANYTHING their answer is to just leave things the way they are. I think the last 8 years speak volumes to what that sort of leadership has given us, and the idea that we're all idiots for noticing the obvious tells me exactly what kind of person we're dealing with here. So rather than explain that ad nauseum (which gets us nowhere) I just call him a jackass and move on (which also gets us nowhere but takes alot less time and effort).
NIB, "Obie" sounds so endearing! Kinda like how my brother calls his cat "Ollie" instead of Oliver. Too cute!

What does that even mean?

Can you elaborate with example, please, Mr. Rugen? Mr. Dyckerson? Anyone?

A lot of the people who live on the streets are mentally ill and that is a tragedy.
They aren't able to hold jobs if they aren't taking their pysch drugs.
But, short of compelling them to take treatment what do you do?
They are feed. Nobody is going hungry. They just aren't.
There is shelter available if they aren't using drugs/alcohol to self-medicate.
And if someone is really motivated to get out of this situation there is help to turn their life around. I won't say that is easy, but churches, the Salvation Army and other benevolant charities specialize in changing lives.

Can you give us a solution to the mentally ill/chronically homeless problem.
I'd like to hear what you have in mind.

I never claimed to have the solution. But your suggestion that the problem is not all that bad, that other people have it worse, is the kind of attitude that certainly won't help bring about any kind of solution.

Peggy Noonan still lives in the 50's, it seems. She is the most out-of-touch "smart" person in the media these days... even worse than George Will.

Remember when our torture of prisoners was something she'd "rather not know about?"
