This makes sense.
If you're on the clock for a media organization, whether it's Sports Illustrated, ESPN, or NBC News, you have no business disseminating news information you've gleaned over the course that that assignment to outlets other than the one that's cutting you a check for your work.
In the pre-internet world, this would have been akin to a CBS News investigative correspondent "sharing" his information with 10,000 of his closest friends at all of the ABC Radio affiliates before filing his package for the CBS Evening News.
This is a no-brainer.

I can see where a tweet that says "Colts trade Peyton Manning" would be off-limits, for the reasons mentioned in the article.
but why couldn't a writer tweet "Colts working on a huge trade, go to (fill in link here) for details"???

I wouldn't tweet anything other than what we're providing "right now," either online or on air. If it's posted to the net, I'll link it up and comment. If it's on air, I'll treat the tweet like I would a tease.
I think it's irresponsible to release info before your outlet makes it available, if you're on the clock.

That may be one of the few things in common.
Had we been more observant that one night in DC, you'd also have "had dinner with Vulcan" in common, too.
