I just had a call from the assignment editor at WEAU-TV in Eau Claire, telling me that John Hoffland, the long time news dirctor, was found dead this morning. An apparent heart attack.
John and I worked together at that station back in the late 70s and early 80s, and he replaced me as news director when I moved to New York in 1981. He had a wonderful sense of humor and over his long career, gave many young people their start in our business.
We spoke on the phone every few weeks, sometimes to share a sticky ethical question or just a joke.
Rest in peace, my friend.
