I didn't know him personally but through the biz and hometown ties, I have friends who did. He was good at what he did and a class act. His long and brave fight against cancer has been an inspiration to many.

Oh, wow. I used to watch him growing up. That's so sad. :(

I did, too. Gary was always on the money -- great voice, too.

He will be sorely missed at 6abc -- where the same evening crew had been at the helm for decades.

I also grew up watching him. Sometimes you see people in big markets and wonder how on earth they got there. Not him. He had enormous talent -- the look, the voice, the enthusiasm for what he covered. He didn't have that fake sportscaster's voice (like his brother Bob does) and he communicated well with the camera. I'm sure he was popular even with people who didn't follow sports.

On top of that, the one time I met him, he seemed like a good guy.
