how do these furloughs work with talent & union contracts? I suppose if someone is under contract, the station is legally obligated to pay the employee under the terms of the contract -- unless Newport declares bankruptcy. how do other stations deal with that? Its a very interesting legal issue.

At our station, we were also told we would have to take 10 days of unpaid furlough. To do so, we'd all have to renegotiate our contracts. Mine happened to be up for renewal at the time so I didn't have to renegotiate, just sign a new one with the furlough in there.

The bottom line for contracted peeps....if they ask, and you say no, you just became a target for non-renewal. 3 year contracts mean nothing if they don't renew at the 1 year intervals...which all mine have in place.

They're being 'asked' to participate! Also it's not a company wide furlough! Account Executives don't have to take time off.

Sales people work on commission.
The company doesn't profit if the sales people are forced to take days off.
The company will potentially lose money.
Why would any managment team force the sale department to take days off?
To make you feel better?
Dolt.

**** you!
Where did I say I was complaining? I know why they didn't furlough the AE's, I've been in TV 12 years, fairly sure I know how the business works. Was a simple clarification.

You'll have to excuse Buffalo Chip. He enjoys being a horse's ass so much, he couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Where did I say I was complaining?
A casual reader would assume that since you mentioned them you were not happy about it.
Otherwise, why bother bring them into the conversation?
Simpleton.

Making assumptions makes you look like a moron.
Although I will say that maybe if the sales staff was more productive, Newport wouldn't be in this position to begin with, so maybe some of them need to be furloughed for good.

That's not the problem. The problem is three decades of consultants, bad management, and greedy ownership.

I don't know what kind of school you went to, Winkie, but an exclamation mark means something.
And I'm going to have to give you a very public slapdown that you deserve to get for being difficult.
The sign used in writing after an exclamation or interjections, expressing strong emotion or astonishment, or to indicate a command.
AVOID OVERUSE!

When you used the exclamation point in the following quote it implied astonishment to the casual reader.
Had you ended the sentence with the common period I wouldn't have pressed this point.
Also it's not a company wide furlough! Account Executives don't have to take time off.
How about some lunch?

When you learn how to correctly format a paragraph then you can come and school me on when it is and is not acceptable to use an exclamation point. Until then, you continue to make your assumptions, and I will continue to use exclamation points where and whenever I see fit!
