Yep. The concept is cool and cost saving, but in reality...competition will create rule bending and breaking. Pool video has already failed in my market....all stations backed out of deal after all stations started making it tough to get video for certain shows.

This seems like a system that would require all participating stations to have tape-free production. If its as simple as shoot & upload, every station should have immediate access to pool footage through a central server.

That doesn't solve the problem of having Matt Lauer in all the shots.

You can get around that by having a mixed crew pool. The photog and reporter come from different sources. That way there is no incentive to shoot anything exclusive. I have done this and it works.

Proofread much? Not enough apparently.
The thought remains good, however. Mixed crew pools are the way to go.

Sounds great. But, as I understand it, the pool in this case is just the photographer. Now you're getting into the business of saying that network C can't send a reporter to something because its photographer is the pool photog for the event.

The problem with these cooperative ventures is that they require cooperation.

....which can be rare when competition is present.

How can it be a pool for just the photographer when Matt Lauer was present? I am confused. They had to be from the same outlet so it wasn't really a pool after all.

We got burned in the same fashion one time on a high profile story. Our management was really bent that the competition got exclusive reporter access and then gave us a bunch of crap. The next day the on-scene authorities said there would be another pool opportunity and I lobbied hard (someone had to) to split the crew. I shot and a competing reporter collected info and did interviews. Yeah, her voice was on tape, but no standups, two-shots or walking around stuff. Why would I do that for her? It worked well and that pattern continued until the story was played out days later.
