When is the best time to start applying for jobs when you are under a contract? My contract expires in about 4 months and I have started applying for jobs, however, I ran into a problem earlier with a station who wanted to hire within the month and I wouldn't have been able to get out of my contract or the city in time to start. Opinions appreciated! (p.s. I'm a producer if that makes a difference)

Thanks

Keep your grubby little hands off producer jobs.

Pay no attention to ECP. He's just bitter because he hasn't worked since the first Bush was in office.

It's always a good time to be looking around.

Screw the contract. If someone makes you a better offer, go for it.

You should be sending out tapes at 4 months. Yes, you'll run into places every-so-often wanting you right then....but a)if they really want you they'll hold off another couple months making someone else fill in, and b)there's a chance with such little time left on your contract the current station will meet you in the middle with enough notice(assuming you have a good relationship with your mgt).
Good luck.

Indeed. Always be looking and networking. Even the best job in the world can disappear in a hurry.

ESPECIALLY the best jobs disappear in a hurry. It's the crappy ones that hang around.
