I hope this gives people ideas on how to use Twitter. With so many people looking for jobs...this is what got me to stand out.

Ugh, how do I do this without sounding like a downer...whatever, it's time to be real.
First of all, congrats on the job, above all else. Any job in this economy is worth celebrating. Now...onto a punch of reality.
Twitter got you a connection, but it wasn't the reason why you got the offer you did. You got a job because you have a solid tape, the right skill set, and worked hard. And let's be honest, you're young and cheap, too. Recognize your station and company just went through a series of layoffs (who hasn't, I know, I get it).
I sure hope you've done your research on your station and company. And the people you'll work with. And the morale of the people where you'll work and live. I've heard stories.

Personally, I know of a fellow employee on double secret probation for tweets he sent to female co-workers. When it got out loosing his job was the least of his worries as the wife was none to happy!

Really? Research the people you're going to work with?

Absolutely. If you don't ask the right questions during the interview, you might find yourself unhappy down the road. If you are interviewing somewhere (especially at a place where the morale appears low), you should meet & greet with anchors/reporters and ask them if they like working there. How are things at the station? Has the economy changed things? You will be interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. There's usually a period at the end of an interview where the interviewee gets to ask questions...use that time! Ask away! You have to show some control in the interview process...not arrogance, but at least a sign that you aren't an idiot, sucker, or willing to settle for something unreasonable. Sure, the business is hurting, but you should still be somewhat picky. Don't take anything; don't work somewhere if you won't be happy, unless you're struggling to put a roof over your head or put food on the table (yes, I know, some of us struggle finanically even with a job in TV, I understand).
Be bold, and have a say in things. If a news director can't answer the hard questions, what does that say about his/her leadership ability and ability to help you if you need it? Be a leader and a follower all at once.
