Brad Ingram was snapping photos of a favorite coworker the other night, when he captured the essence of the late shift live shot... a swath of blacktop, a vigilant lens, the brackish mix of street lamp and moonlight. Anyone who (still) thinks their local news crew has a glamorous job never babysat an empty parking lot in a sketchy part of town. Leah Beno (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/204/501332399_c380df5cf1.jpg) has. For two years she and an El Ocho photog have crisscrossed the Piedmont, pixelating intrigue long after I've locked myself in my upper lair. Any general news shift can wear you down, but nights - with its thankless pace, morass of meetings and sprees of inner city subterfuge - can at best erode you social skills and, if untreated, really eff with your head. Which is why I've always been so impressed with the aforementioned Ms. Beno. Capable, poised and striking, this Michigan native has maintained her decorum, despite being surrounded by city politicians, fresh felons, and worst of all, surly news shooters. Through it all , she's displayed the manners of a delightful garden party guest - albeit one who would happily grill you if the punch tasted funny. After tonight however, Leah will no longer be a fixture on the region's evening news. Instead, she'll be impressing viewers closer to her own home, a move that leaves all her El Ocho peeps feeling blue and a few of them seeking therapy. Hey, smart and pretty reporters come and go - but it's odd to encounter one so at ease with her TV reception. Can we clone her before she heads up North?
