Attention all NBC affiliates, say good bye to your 11pm news viewers now!
Anyone think this will work? At the network price-chopping level, maybe. But isn't it just going to kill the 11pm news and any potential Conan viewers at 11:35pm?

Not only will it not work, but half the nation will be asleep before the show goes into the second break...

There's a good thread on Open Line about this subject. Consensus so far agrees with both of you.

Half the nation SHOULD be asleep by then, quite frankly.
As we learn more and more about the human body's need for an absolute minimum of 7 hours of sleep a night (ideally 8 or 9 hours), the notion of staying up late -- even until 11:35 for the local news -- is looking to be about as good for your health as a pack of cigarettes.
You all know how to backtime. If you have to be at work by 9:00 AM, and your commute is the standard 30 minutes, and it takes you an hour from eyes open to walking out the door ... staying up for ANY of the late shows is out of the question. And of course for those people in flyover country who have this obsession with being at work BEFORE 9:00 AM ... well, you do the math.

Not only will it not work, I will show how much it wouldn't work even if it should work.

Well, when one's office hours start at 8:30, it's a healthy "obsession" to get to work before 9 -- regardless of location.

And without Manhattan, you'd have ZERO programming for your station.

If you're NBC, that might be a blessing, what with Heroes 26 and My Own Worst TV Network...;)

Yeah that would be too bad in the days before internet.
But now I don't even need tv...medialine and several other outlets provide more entertainment than anything a network sitcom can come up with.

Oh that's right, I forgot that the ONLY stations in America that do local news are network affiliates.
Enjoy the fat paycheck Matt. It won't last much longer. The next big 3 to ask Congress for a bailout will be ABC, CBS and NBC.

WHAT "fat paycheck"??

You tell me, mister "More than a Supreme Court Justice". That's more than $200K a year. Maybe in NYC, home of the $14 bagel & a cup of coffee breakfast, that's not a "fat paycheck" but even in L.A. where I'm originally from, that's "fat" money.
And my point still stands. The networks are in panic mode right now, hoping that the economy turns around and advertisers start buying again. FAST.
How soon before the layoffs reach Matt's Ivory Tower? I give it a year, tops.

NBC was getting its ass handed to them at the 10:00 hour anyway. It's worth a shot. They'll save a ton in not wasting money to come up with "Knight Rider" and "My Own Worst Enemy".
