Saw the post over on "open line" by s'news...then wondered about your station's policy on decorating the news desk/set with Christmasy decorations. I'm not talking overt religious symbols such as nativity sets or crosses or menorahs for Hanukkah.

Have our stations become so neutral to "Christmas" that some stations avoid decorating the set with poinsettias or greenery or a tree? What do our viewers expect from us?

Along the same lines: does your station (or others in the market) do any holiday promo spots? The news team saying "Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays" or videotaping area high school choirs singing carols? How far does your station go to season-up the season?

Best station I ever enjoyed at Christmas had school choirs come into the studio and sing against the green wall, which was showing falling snow.

We dress the set (a working newsroom set) with a tree, stockings (named for all us newsies), flowers, etc.

Station #1- Plastic (red)Poinsettas that would come out each year, AND NEVER DUSTED!
Station #2- Real (red)Poinsettas....a SEA of them....so many in the backdrop it seemed we were at times reporting from someone's garden.
Station #3(Current)- Christmas Tree with lights and decorations, kinda.

We have a local florist and decorator come in and add trees with lights, real poinsettias, and greenery on the desk. It looks like a christmas mall threw up on our news set, and makes it a lot harder to get decent camera shots.

We put a festivus pole on the desk and have the anchors compete each night in feats of strength.

We put a bunch of poinsettias on the ledge behind the anchors and essentially all over the newsroom.

December 22nd...also known as the Night Before Festivus! We bring in volunteers to operate a phone bank and give viewers the chance to air their grievances live.

We ask our anchors to wear something festive during December. The guys wear red sweaters and the gals wear tinsel twirlers.

Oh go ahead and make the place a bit more festive for the holidays. Just don't get carried away and have the place look like a department store.
