It's a really good promo. They could use a stronger voice talent, but the premise is awesome; it makes excellent points and gives people a reason to come to their website.

The sad thing is TV can't take this approach or it would be self-depricating but should approach the website in a similar way, driving people there for continuing coverage. This has never happened in my experience however as stations are loathe to release info before they can show it on-air.

Nice promo, but two things bother me:
1. Sure, as viewers, we must wait for the live report. And there's always the run-up before (how do you pronounce this, etc.). What that promo failed to detail is that there still is a run-up before a .com report. Check the laptop, is it fully charged, spell check, did the report actually reach the destination, etc.
2. Especially in breaking news, people still want a live report, preferably from a reporter who can give quick details. The online report can, at best, only give a static picture (unless streaming video) and the most recent posting. An on-air report can give up-to-the-second updates (for instance, a major car crash that can affect traffic for miles).
In other words, both should work hand-in-hand, but not completely at the expense of the other.

We're both eventually merging anyway... tv folks need to learn solid/in-depth reporting and newspaper folks need to learn how to play to a visible medium.
I think it's stupid to take shots @ each other.

So do you think you should stop running promos that say your station is better than the guys across the street? Kind of stupid to take shots at each other...one might end up a winner. We should all just split the ratings shares equally.

Come on...why would you not run an ad saying why you are better than your competition? As wx said, some might be arguable, but you can get updates on various things WAY before you will see then on TV news. If it's truly breaking news, then sure, TV still has the advantage, but for various things that happen throughout the day that wouldn't require a cutin, the statesman's website blows away the competition.

This message has been going of for years. One radio ad was clever when it said, read it tomorrow, watch it tonight or hear it now.

So where is this spot running? Did they buy time on TV? Are any of the news stations allowing it to run or is promoted only on their website?

As long as we can count on breaking news happening at a specific time, TV news kicks butt!

Calling upandown.

Too bad you can't post your series on tv news versus newspaper on youtube

It would be entertaining viewing even today.

While it may be stupid to take shots at each other, a local Gannett rag and TV station tried that experiment at one time.
They placed the print journalists on cam for live shots and had the TV news folk write some articles.
The result?

Print newser on cam:

Lots of stumbling, over-reliance to notes and a few bad cases of mic fright came across.
The experiment was killed very quietly, probably at the TV NDs request.
TV newser is still writing the articles, to this day.

TV newser knows in-depth reporting. That is demonstrated by countless investigative pieces that have won awards across the nation.
Print newser needs to know, that while on cam, he/she is reporting to ONE person, the viewer and not writing for the masses.
