I'm trying to remember the name of a really great assistant ND at WCCO-TV I interviewed with back in 1985 or so.

Somehow initials with K come to mind. He was a real newsman's newsman. This was about the time Beth Pearlman had returned to WCCO as a producer after a stint at the CBS Washington bureau.

Anybody remember who I'm talking about, and where he might be today?

Dave Nimmer!

Nimmer retired after 15 years at WCCO and twenty as the managing editor of the Minneapolis Star, then taught at the University of St. Thomas J-school for ten.

Thanks Nim for teaching me the "rule of threes" and a shout-out to Don Shelby for getting me the info. Classy gentlemen all in a classy shop. Sorry there was never room at the inn there.

Dave is, indeed, a class guy.

Many years ago, I had a print guy apply for a reporting job with me at WEAU-TV in Eau Claire. He was an excellent reporter, and his only misgiving was making the transition and whether he would succeed. I had him call Dave Nimmer and the result was a great employee who is still reporting and anchoring his own syndicated show.

I never aspired to the big market (in fact, turned down a couple of opportunities), but if I had taken a larger market job somewhere, WCCO would have been at the top of my list in the 1970s and 1980s.

Rule of threes?

Dave taught that writing is more powerful when you cluster things in threes.

For example, Mighty Dyckerson is a pervert, ahumorous and an embarrassment.

Ah. Okay. All is revealed.

I was thinking of the Rule of Thirds in photojournalism.
