2003: Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze strikes a deal with Russia's Gazprom, angering US oil companies and the oil men in the White House.

2003: Bush/Cheney order the CIA to remove Shevardnadze from power during the "Rose Revolution" and replaces him with US backed Mikheil Saakashvili.

8/8/2008: Georgia attacks South Ossetia with overwhelming force - destroying the capital of Tskhinvali. 90% of residents are Russian citizens. Russia compares Saakashvili to Saddam Hussein and his attack on Tskhinvali to Hussein's attack on Kurdish villages in the 1980s. Russia responds by sending in tanks to protect its peace keepers who were already in South Ossetia.

Shevardnadze left office over allegations of corruption and unfair parliamentary elections.

I admired his courage during the collapse of the Soviet Union, something for which he never got full credit. He and Yeltsin realized the Soviet system was a failure long before Gorbachev did.

Tskhinvali never panned out for the nuggets either
