Betty's schtick involves having her seat set as high as possible so her knee is visible on camera, while in a skirt.

They might have tried, but like Spike said, you cannot copyright a word.
You can trademark/servicemark a word though...
I have been thinking about trademarking 'ewink', so that I can sue all these spammers who send spam using my name! I get a lot of bounced spam mail returned to me....

Hey, just for the record, I worked with Betty for several years when she was, first, reporting and then anchoring. She is as professional as any anchor I've ever worked with and as a reporter in the field she was head and shoulders above most others. It’s real easy to mock and criticize someone from a distance. Betty is a pro, whether you like her on air or not; she's also one of the most descent people you'd ever hope to meet in any walk of life.

I have consulted with sources who are involved heavily with trademark law and, in keeping with the earlier example, and with consistency as to using parts of the last names, as per established federal law and appellate court rulings, it would be ...
McOmney or McComney.

No. As noted in both Plessy v. Ferguson and Marbury v. Madison, both last names must be used. Even in the rare case where the use of first names is argued, case law, notably a majority ruling in CNN Anchor v. U.S. Department of Trademarks and Stuff and in an often-cited dissent in Barack v. Hillary, the portion of the presidential candidate's name comes before that of the running mate.

Defensive much?
And for my own record, people who combine names when talking about 2 people deserve all the grief they can get. With the exception of whoever came up with Bragalina and TomKat. They deserve death.

I neglected to mention that as a result of the interlocutory appeal of In re Lorne Green and also in Brad Pitt v. Tom Cruise, the court found that shortened combination names involving a married couple should use the man's name first, because the high court is just plain sexist that way. The court has not yet taken a case involving a married couple of the same sex.
Many people don't know that death sentences were handed out as a result of each of the court rulings I cited in this post. The defendants remain on federal death row at this time.

And that's fine, take her to task for what she said. But to presume to question her professionalism, when clearly people haven't worked with her, and therefore don't know how professional she actually is; then something should be said. I didn't see the segment, and I agree such name contractions are annoying, but I'd be willing to bet she said it because she too finds the contractions stupid and not because she thought she was being clever.
Once upon a time my Father was diagnosed with cancer, again. I visited him at M.D. Anderson on my days off before going back to work for the weekend shift. No one knew, I never said anything to anyone about it; but I was pretty blue. Out of the entire newsroom Betty was the only one who noticed I was slightly subdued and asked if everything was Okay. She's the only one who noticed the subtle change in my demeanor. In a newsroom filled with individuals so self-absorbed that they should carry Toxic Shock Syndrome warning labels only one person had the sensitivity to reach out to an acquaintance and offer an ear and sympathy. That's a pretty rare individual in any walk of life, but even more so in a newsroom. I wish I possessed that level of empathy and compassion.
Defensive, you bet; and if you were a friend or acquaintance unfairly accused of being flawed, I'd defend you too.

I didn't accuse you, it was Quagmire who wrote it and it's really not that big of a deal; I wasn't trying to pick a fight with anyone. I just wanted to clarify that she isn't where she is just because she's beautiful, which she is. There's a stereotype of pretty women on the network level, that they're there only because they're pretty and not because they're smart. It seemed that that's where this thread was headed and I couldn't sit quietly by while my friend was being (or about to be) lumped in a group as a bubble-headed bimbo. She works hard, she's very smart, she's well informed, and is just about everything you'd want a reporter or anchor to be.

I seriously could care less who "coined" a term or what the term is. If I were attributed as coining a term like that I'd seriously think of going on-air and apologizing. Or resigning. Seriously. Is Betty Nguyen a CNN reporter or an E! reporter? It's ridiculous that someone had the wherewithall to take idiotic cues from the entertainment world (Brangelina, Bennifer, etc.) and think it's OK to apply them to real news .:frustrated:
No wonder news content and credibility is going down the drain (aside from the many other reasons).

Interestingly enough, Pat Riley copyrighted the term "three-peat" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-peat) and merchandizers had to pay royalties to him for subsequent use on products during the Chicago Bulls championship run in the 90's.
