FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Rather than seek shelter, a kite boarder in Fort Lauderdale, Florida thought he'd have a little fun with Tropical Storm Fay.But he turned out to get a ride that left him in the hospital. He was harnessed into his sail when the wind picked him up and slammed him onto the beach. Then, he was dragged across the sand before being lifted up into the air again and blown across the street where the wind slammed him into a building.Witnesses ran to help the man who lay crumpled on the ground in pain.He was taken to the hospital where he is in critical condition

Call me cruel and heartless, but I have no sympathy for dumb dare devils like this one. He's not discovering new territories or advancing mankind in way, shape, or form with his silly stunts. Except maybe for breaking new boundaries of stupidity...

In order to be eligible for a Darwin award, the nominee must remove himself from the gene pool. In other words, survivors of stupidity, like this guy, are ineligible.

Leave the guy alone. He was training for the Olympics.

Special Olympics, maybe?
(No offense intended.)

Well, he gave it pretty good try.

Maybe we should refer to him as a "Darwin hopeful."

I've collected all of the Darwin books. Another condition of eligibility is that, although the victim survived, there is no way that the person can further populate the gene pool.

Only surfers can tease the wind and even they'll be cautious beyond a certain point. Otherwise, not a good idea to be messing around like that.

Thank you for your submission to the Medialine Darwin Award Committee.
After careful consideration we have decided not to nominate your Fort Lauderdale kiteboarder at this time. If he should happen to die from his idiotic self inflicted injuries we will be happy to reconsider.
Sincerely,
NIB

Thought I saw a report somewhere that he did, in fact, die at the hospital...but I can't remember where I saw it. I'll look it up when I have more time.

No, he was dumber than that. He strapped himself into a harness.

I saw one report that mentioned Kearney's harness had an emergency release capability.
They speculated he didn't have time to use it.
Personally, I would have thought about employing it after the first mouthful of sand.

That was awesome. I expected it to end with a shot of the guy flattened against the wall, then slowly peeling off.
