PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba (AP) -- A man aboard a Greyhound bus
repeatedly stabbed and then decapitated a fellow passenger,
witnesses said Thursday.
The man was arrested for the killing, which occurred Wednesday
night aboard a bus traveling from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg,
Manitoba, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.
Authorities declined to name the attacker and victim, and
provided no other details about the attack.
But passenger Garnet Caton said the victim was stabbed dozens of
times by the man sitting next to him. The passenger then severed
the man's head with a large knife.
"We heard this bloodcurdling scream and turned around, and the
guy was standing up, stabbing this guy repeatedly, like 40 or 50
times," Caton said from a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba, where he and
other passengers had been taken to rest.
"There was no rage or anything. He was like a robot, stabbing
the guy."
Caton said passengers raced from the bus but then he, the bus
driver and a trucker at the scene re-boarded to see what was
happening.
Caton said he saw the suspect had the victim on the floor of the
bus and "was cutting his head off and pretty much gutting him."
He said the attacker calmly came to the front of the bus to show
off the head.
"He dropped the head and went back and started cutting the body
back up," said Cody Olmstead, a passenger from Kentville, Nova
Scotia.
The victim, who Caton said appeared to be about 19, had been on
the bus since Edmonton. He said the attacker boarded the bus in
Brandon, Manitoba, about 80 miles west of Portage La Prairie.
The suspect had been on the bus about an hour and initially did
not sit near the victim.
"He sat in the front at first, everything was normal," Caton
said.
"We went to the next stop and he got off and had a smoke with
another young lady there. When he got on the bus again, he came to
the back near where I was sitting.
"He put his bags in the overhead compartment. He didn't say a
word to anybody. He seemed totally normal," Caton said. "About a
half an hour later, we heard this bloodcurdling scream."
Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said 37 passengers and one
driver were on the bus.
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day called the attack bizarre,
but did not discuss details, saying he did not want to jeopardize
the investigation.

Family of beheaded Manitoba man says he loved travel, meeting people
58 minutes ago
WINNIPEG — A young man killed in a seemingly random attack aboard a Greyhound bus in Manitoba was a charmer who loved meeting people and saw the good in everyone, his family said Saturday, as they were still reeling not only from losing the 22-year-old, but from the horror of the way he died.
Tim McLean's family described the young carnival worker as a kind soul and a free spirit.
"Tim spent his life travelling and meeting new people and always saw the good in everyone," Alex McLean, Tim McLean's uncle, said, reading from a statement on behalf of the family.
"He was a little guy with a heart bigger than you could know."
Despite their struggle to cope with Tim McLean's gruesome death and intense media attention, the family is grateful for all the support they have received and overwhelmed by the outpouring even from complete strangers, Alex McLean said.
He said his nephew made friends effortlessly and accepted everyone for who they were.
"He had the most infectious giggle," he said.
"You could hear him laughing a mile away. It didn't matter what kind of a day you were having, because when you heard him laugh, you couldn't help but join in."
It was the first time the family commented publicly on the death since horrified passengers on a bus Wednesday from Edmonton to Winnipeg told of seeing Tim McLean knifed to death and decapitated.
Also Saturday, a chilling recording of a radio transmission between RCMP officers responding to the killing received widespread attention on the Internet.
On the recording, one officer describes the suspect - who police code-named Badger - moving around the bus, which was barricaded by the driver and a passenger.
"Badger is armed with a knife and a pair of scissors and he is defiling the body at the front of the bus as we speak," an officer says on the transmission.
The approximately 80-second recording was posted on several websites, including YouTube, where it had registered more than 9,300 hits before it was made unavailable early Saturday afternoon.
The RCMP issued a news release stressing they had not given permission to use the transmission as they are "operational police communications and as such are not meant for public consumption. "
"Okay, Badger's at the back of the bus, hacking off pieces and eating it," the transmission ends.
Witnesses said McLean was attacked, unprovoked and without warning, by a man sitting next to him who had not uttered a word.
They described how McLean was stabbed dozens of times as the driver ushered passengers off the bus and barricaded the door shut so the attacker couldn't escape.
Alone in the bus, the attacker carved up McLean's body and later came to the front of the bus holding McLean's severed head, two witnesses reported.
Police have only confirmed McLean was stabbed but have not released details of the horrifying killing.
Police laid a charge of second-degree murder this week against a suspect, Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmonton.
Li made his first appearance in court Friday and is scheduled to be back before a judge in Portage la Prairie on Tuesday.
Li did not enter a plea to the charges, which haven't been proven in court, and had not retained a lawyer to represent him.
Li's employer said in an interview Saturday that he was shocked to learn that his "model employee" had been accused of the grisly attack. Vincent Augert, an independent contractor who distributes newspapers in Edmonton, said that Li was one of his most reliable carriers.
"He was very punctual and always cleanly dressed," Augert said. "He was a very nice, polite guy."
Augert said that Li called him two weeks ago saying that he needed a day or two off to go to Winnipeg for a job interview at the end of July. He said he called him back and left him a message asking him for the dates he needed off but never heard back from him.
"That was unusual for him not to call back and then when he didn't show up for work on Tuesday we got worried," said Augert.
Augert said he called Li's cellphone on Thursday and his wife answered. She told him that she had not heard from Li either, and that he had said he had to leave for a family emergency a few days ago.
"And then when I found out in the news that Li was being pinned for the brutal attack, I was in utter shock," he said.
As the police investigation continues, the online forums that sprouted shortly after the tragedy have transformed into a sprawling online community, with tens of thousands showing support for McLean's family and expressing disgust for the act itself.
One of the many groups on the social networking site Facebook has accumulated over 40,000 members with more than 2,000 wall posts.
"I never knew Tim and his family, but I wish all the best in this awful time," wrote Tamara from Edmonton.
Tracy in Calgary called McLean's death "a senseless loss of life."
"It's something right out of a horror movie," added Sheena in Edmonton.
Some news coverage videos on YouTube have received upwards of 40,000 hits, and a number of people have weighed on the issue, publishing webcam video of themselves trying to deal with what happened.
McLean's uncle said the support had helped the family.
"The outpouring of well-wishes from complete strangers has been overwhelming," he said.
"The family appreciates all the love and support from friends, loved ones and the public nationwide."
In Dallas, Greyhound spokesperson Abby Wambaugh said ridership is remaining stable despite the tragedy.
"As of right now we've seen little to no impact on ticket sales and inter-city bus travel continues to be a safe way to travel," said Wambaugh in a phone interview.
She said she couldn't comment on how the bus driver is faring, citing privacy reasons, but stressed that in the case of a violent passenger, the driver handled the situation by the book.
"They are taught to immediately pull over the bus and call the authorities," said Wambaugh.
"The bus driver did exactly what our policy states."

Police tape: Canada bus killer ate victim's flesh
By CHARMAINE NORONHA – 1 hour ago
TORONTO (AP) — A police officer at the scene of a grisly beheading on a Canadian bus reported seeing the attacker hacking off pieces of the victim's body and eating them, according to a police tape leaked on the Internet Saturday.
In the tape of radio transmissions, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer refers to the attacker as "Badger" and says he is armed with a knife and scissors and is "defiling the body at the front of the bus as we speak."
On the tape, which lasts about 80 seconds, officers continue to detail the attacker's movements until one reports, "Badger's at the back of the bus, hacking off pieces and eating it."
The RCMP described the tapes as "operational police communications and, as such, are not meant for public consumption." Police said permission had not been given to use the radio transmission, which was posted on LiveLeak.com and picked up by other Web sites.
Officers were responding to a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway about 12 miles from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, after the bloody attack late Wednesday on the bus traveling from Edmonton, Alberta to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Vince Weiguang Li, 40, faces second-degree murder charges for the murder of a 22-year-old man, who friends and family identified as Tim McLean. Police have not confirmed the victim's identity.
Passengers said they had just reboarded the bus following a break when the suspect — for no apparent reason — stabbed the man sitting next to him dozens of times as passengers fled in horror. He then severed the man's head, displayed it and began hacking at the body

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba (AP) -- A man accused of stabbing,
beheading and cannibalizing another man on a Greyhound bus in
Canada pleaded Tuesday in court for someone to "please kill me,"
and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Vince Weiguang Li, who immigrated to Canada from China in 2004,
is charged with second-degree murder in last Wednesday's slaying of
22-year-old carnival worker Tim McLean -- an attack which witnesses
aboard the bus said appeared to be unprovoked. He has yet to enter
a plea.
Li was scheduled to appear Tuesday to determine whether he
should undergo psychiatric testing, but the judge in Portage La
Prairie adjourned the hearing for a short recess to allow a legal
aid attorney to confer with him. Since his arrest, Li has declined
to speak to prosecutors and his court-appointed attorney.
When asked again by the judge after the recess if he wanted a
lawyer, Li shook his head and then quietly said "please kill me,"
The Canadian Press reported.
Li's remark was heard by reporters and confirmed by court
clerks, but was not acknowledged by the judge. He is due back in
court Sept. 8.
Thirty-seven passengers were aboard the Greyhound from Edmonton,
Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, as it traveled along a desolate
stretch of the TransCanada Highway about 12 miles from Portage La
Prairie. Some were napping and others watching "The Legend of
Zorro" when Li attacked McLean, allegedly stabbing him dozens of
times. As horrified passengers fled from the bus, Li severed
McLean's head, displaying to some of the passengers gathered
outside the bus, witnesses said. He then began hacking at the body.
A police officer at the scene reported seeing the attacker
hacking off pieces of the victim's body and eating them, according
to a police tape leaked on the Internet.
A church pastor, Tom Castor, who helped hire Li soon after he
immigrated in 2004 with his wife, Anna, said the man never showed
any sign of anger or emotional problems when he worked there as a
custodian.
Church officials said they vetted Li by contacting references
listed on his application and running a criminal record check.
More than 105,000 people have joined an online memorial group
for McLean.

Sometimes truth is stranger than...
"Greyhound has scrapped an ad campaign that extolled the relaxing upside of bus travel after one of its passengers was accused of beheading and cannibalizing another traveler. The ad's tag line was "There's a reason you've never heard of 'bus rage.'"
Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said Wednesday a billboard and some tunnel posters near a bus terminal in Toronto are still up and would be removed later in the day."
