long time no post!

i need help! :) i emailed a tv station about hosting jobs. the guy emailed me back and said they don't have hosts on their station (which is stupid because i see hosts on there every morning) but he said they do need 'goergia reporters' and i could send him a tape. that didn't make any sense because i'm not in georgia and neither is the station. i know tv stations are owned by other companies and i thought maybe he meant he needed reporters for his company's georgia station, but i checked and his company doesn't have a station in georgia. i mean there are stations with the same network but they aren't part of the same company if you know what i mean.

is a georgia reporter some special kind of reporter? or is this guy trying to pull something over on me? i really just wanted a host position but i might consider this other position if it's a way to get my foot in the door.

i didn't call, i emailed. i don't understand your question. they have hosts like every other station. i am most interested in hosting in the morning, since they get to be more friendly and chat more with guests like the chefs. but i would consider hosting at night too.

seriously doubt this is real.
no one can be that stupid.

but just in case it is.... the guy probably told you they had GA reporters (general assignment).... that means if you got hired you'd be sent in the field to cover what they told you to.
GA doesn't mean Georgia.

and no one in news is called a "host."
the people you see sitting in front of a big table are "anchors."

it sounds like you want to be a "TV personality" so go that route... try the Food Network, Entertainment Tonight, etc.

PLEASE stay out of news.

Screw you scumbag. I am not stupid. I graduated from Auburn with a 3.2 GPA and a degree in Communications. Auburn is not an easy school. I got married and had a baby right after graduation and never got to work in the business, so EXCUSE ME if I don't know all the inside terms.

I don't see the difference anyway. What your 'anchors' do is no different from what the people on the shopping channel do, and they are called 'hosts'. I see the shopping channel 'anchors' chatting with people on the phone just like the TV station 'anchors' chat with guests in the studio. The evening news hosts have it even easier, since all they have to do is read the screen and they don't have to talk to people. My skill is that I am a people person and can hold an intelligent conversation.

Food Network? Like I said, I am not stupid. I know that it takes years for someone to work their way up to a network. I have to start somewhere. People who want to work in a network start at their local station.

Laurie, if you really want to get a job in television, here's what you need to do. Have you ever interned in news? If not, you need to. Try to develop a friendship with a photographer. Ask if he/she would mind if you tagged along on stories on days when you're not working. Go out a few times and ask if they would mind shooting a stand-up or two for you and if you can use the video they shot for the news to put together your own story. This is how you make a tape. Once you have a tape, you start out by sending it out to small-market stations (think places like Billings, MT, Idaho Falls, ID, Abeliene, TX, etc.). You will probably land a job as a reporter somewhere which can very well turn into a reporter/anchor position. Once you're able to anchor, you need to make a new tape and send it out to bigger markets. Eventually, you can land a morning anchor spot if you're not too picky about location.

... I know that it takes years for someone to work their way up to a network. I have to start somewhere. People who want to work in a network start at their local station.

Laurie - just as in any other industry - you also have to work your way up the ladder at a local station. While it may not be the case for everyone - you must first log in the hours as a General Assignment reporter at a station before being considered as a sub to anchor. You'll have to build up your resume reel with real reporting before anyone might consider you for an anchor spot. If you're really good .. and have top notch reporting skills ... then perhaps you'll be lucky enough to land a weekend sub spot in the anchor chair. It takes a LOT of work! Many stations now are asking for talent that can report and anchor ... they wear many hats ... and it's not an easy job.

The only place here in the Orlando market that had a magazine type show - with a host - was the Saturday community relations show at my old station. I was the floor director {one of my many tasks at that tiny station!} and we had a "host" chat with the guests. The station did not have a news department - but was required to do this 30 minute magazine style show to meet FCC regulations on public service. When our station was bought out by FOX - the show was taken over by the FOX news department and is now hosted by one of the news anchors.

The original "host" of the show went back into acting as her career. You might want to find an agent that can help you find infomercial hosting jobs, or PSA's, local commercials ... go that route instead.

If you're really only interested in "hosting" by the way of conversing with people - perhaps you should look into Talk Radio at one of your local radio stations. Because in reality - an on-air local TV job requires you to be a JOURNALIST first and foremost. And any national network gig - like the Food Network and HGTV - requires you to be an expert in the field before you can host.

{And just an aside ... I graduated with a BA Degree in Organizational Communication with a 4.0 GPA in my area of study. The classes I took really had nothing to do with journalism ... and I wonder if your degree program prepared you for a journalism career?}

Auburn? Well, then EXCUSE US for not noticing your obvious intelligence.

I don't see the difference anyway. What your 'anchors' do is no different from what the people on the shopping channel do, and they are called 'hosts'.

Why don't you e-mail the shopping channel, then? Those jobs don't require previous experience. And they won't make you bother with all that icky going outside to do journalism and stuff.

On 9 out of 10 days, maybe 19 out of 20, you are correct that all the anchor has to do is put on makeup and read out loud. It's on that tenth or 20th day when the anchor has to ad-lib either to cover a breaking news event or to cover for some studio mishap -- in short, has to have a genuine interest in the news beyond reading it on the "screen" -- and the wannabe Food Network host throws up all over him/herself on the air (figuratively, probably) and embarrasses the station.

I came here for help. Instead I get --holes.

Laurie: Some good advice, here.

And for the record, we had a "host" on our noon show for a number of years ... she did little 3- or 4-minute live features from the zoo or the fair or the quilting guild ... that sort of "magazine" stuff, as Hush said.

Some local news sations do, in fact, have "hosts" -- they're just not to be confused with "anchors," that's all.

Incidentally, our "host" started in commercials and acting jobs. She turned to TV when she married an LA anchor, and they moved back to the midwest.

But photographer is the correct term. I'd be more than happy to scan my business cards from my last 3 stations to prove it. :)

Why is photographer correct?

Because I take (or 'shoot') 29.97 still photos per second. I also record audio to go along with all those hundreds of pictures!

At any rate, I could almost see this being a real person with a real issue before the whole photographer thing. I actually had ENG specific classes in school, yet had no idea what a VOSOT was when I started my first real news job. Some schools tend to not teach you lingo.

I am glad that you earned a 3.2 G.P.A. at Auburn. Now go back and ask them why they didn't teach you that a GA Reporter means General Assignment, not Georgia. Than ask them for your money back.

The advice that you start as an intern is great advice. Your education at Auburn obviously taught you little about the news business.

BTW, it's ---hole, not --hole. I guess they also don't teach spelling at Auburn. Or to start sentences with a capital letter. And it's "I" when referring to yourself, not "i" as you wrote.

i could not intern because the only internships auburn offered were for the sports department filming football for the coaches. i am not a videographer, and besides there's too much competition for those positions.

i knew a guy who tried to get an internship at a station in montgomery and got a job instead. he said he liked working there but he griped all the time about how they treated him. plus he had to drive 45 minutes from auburn to get there. definitely not worth it.

I think you'll find healthy competition in ANY news position right now. As for "Host"...there are far fewer of those positions, not to mention 'host' are getting fired left and right as cutbacks continue. The field is flooded right now. Glass half full? Your inexperience ironically ups your value as stations are switching pistachios for peanuts.

Laurie ... I'm saying this as kindly as possible .. but I don't think Television is for you. You'll be away from your daughter way more than you think ... working overnights, weekends, holidays, etc... If you're not willing to travel 45 minutes to an internship ... what are you going to do when you have to cover a story that's an hour away?

I think I'm going to go take a look at the Auburn course catalog for a BA in Communication. I'm now very curious.

ETA: Hmmm ... it looks like Auburn offers a BA in Radio and TV as well as a BA in Journalism. Were these not offered while you were there? The BA Communication program doesn't have one journalism or TV class in the curriculum. When were you at Auburn?

And I wasn't talking about just videographer positions....ON-AIR or OFF-AIR....you're going to have competition. Tough too, because while being a Mommy is a wonderful thing....there were quite a few peep's climbing the news ladder(whatever job they're after)while you were unable to work. You have to compete with them...and some of them may very well be interns who have a foot in the door!

One more suggestion: Change your name or pray that anyone you work with in the business never sees your posts on this thread. I'm serious. Call me an --hole, but the more you write, the more your posts will be passed around the newsroom for comic relief.

it's the left shift key that's sticky. That means that letters on the right side of the keyboard are hard to capitalize. To do what you said, i would have to hit the right shift key and letters on the right with the same hand at the same time. it's awkward to do that, and as you can see it looks weird to have some sentences start with capitals and some with small letters.

Man, I’m sorry to be late to the party, but this is priceless and my deepest appreciation to all the Medialiners who made it just this priceless. You guys are worth your weight in quad reels!

Now, to be fair, Laurie asked, “…is a georgia reporter some special kind of reporter? or is this guy trying to pull something over on me?

Poor Laurie seems to have pulled it over on herself. Frankly, I don’t know how she has time what with Haylee and her M.O.

Laurie, dear, how is it you assert you came onto Medialine to “ … ask jerks with nothing better to do than be smart alecs…” for help, then you call us scumbags and “…--holes.” Nice going. That’s going to get you really far professionally.

“I don't see the difference anyway. What your 'anchors' do is no different from what the people on the shopping channel do, and they are called 'hosts'. I see the shopping channel 'anchors' chatting with people on the phone just like the TV station 'anchors' chat with guests in the studio.”

Laurie, dear, do you have any idea that anchors often Interview people in order to Obtain Information and help Inform the Public? That’s a tad more than chatting. And, no, don’t fret, that wasn’t slang for tadpole.

“…i have a thing about being called stupid….”

Forrest: “Stupid is as stupid does, Sir.”

Oddly enough, Laurie, dear, Forrest Gump starts out set in Savannah, which also oddly enough happens to be in the state of GA.

“….but to normal people 'ga' stands for Georgia…”

And WHO are you calling normal?!

Just like shrimp, a little “GA” can go a LONGGGGGGGGGG way –

GA.org (http://www.gamblersanonymous.org/)

www.un.org/ga/ (http://www.un.org/ga/)

And never forgetting our old friend Gallium! (http://periodic.lanl.gov/elements/31.html) Dyck should feel especially honored to associate himself with the likes of that!

“i could not intern because the only internships auburn offered were for the sports department filming football for the coaches. i am not a videographer, and besides there's too much competition for those positions.

i knew a guy who tried to get an internship at a station in montgomery and got a job instead … but he griped all the time about how they treated him. plus he had to drive 45 minutes from auburn to get there. definitely not worth it.”

Hmmm, so, you didn’t think there was anything you learn shooting football and you’re not really ready to make some sacrifice to make something of yourself in this field? Yup, you’re GA ready. G.A. = Great Attitude/not.

Hushsquared so eloquently divined, “…Another little pet peeve of mine. Something passed on from one of my Professors. Your major is in COMMUNICATION ... singular. Not COMMUNICATIONS ... plural. Sorry ... but that's been bugging me since yesterday.”

And just for my bonus point, I looked it up. “Department of Communication and Journalism”, Auburn University (http://media.cla.auburn.edu/cmjn/ug/communication/faculty.cfm)

“…who's particularly stupid?”

I can't rightly say . . . however, fear not, if you dig up a position for a va. reporter, I’m pretty sure you won’t be assigned to the OB/GYN Bureau . . . .

Boy, you forget that people really do age whne they aren't in Hollywood constantly undergoing facial reengineering. She was always one of my favorite Bond girls, even if it was a wretched movie.

Laurie,

Forget these posters and read carefully. Anyone with little or no experience in the business needs to contact Michael Rosenblum out of New York. He is the master of helping your kind break into the business. The great part is he doesn't charge and arm and a leg... and he has some amazing connections with the Travel channel and others like it. Good Luck and please let me know how it goes.

first of all, auburn did offer internships. the internships were with the sports department, filming football practice and football games for the coaches. no tv stations offered internships through our school. like i said earlier, when our students tried to get internships with the stations in montgomery they got jobs instead.

second, auburn's communications department has a radio television film major. they do teach television classes, or else they wouldn't offer a degree in rtf. i did not officially major in rtf, but it didn't matter because i took all the same classes. all you had to do to get the rtf degree is take one of the production courses, and i took both the radio class and the efp class.

so you don't know what you're talking about. who's particularly stupid?

I work for an Alabama television station, and I've had many students from Auburn. I'm also the intern coordinator, have been for the last 8 years. Don't say stations don't offer news internships. I've worked with many an Auburn journalism student.

Oh - I get it. . . .you want to be a hostess. In the TV business we call that a floor director, they are the ones who show the anchors to thier seats and bring them water.

Here's Laurie's hostess.
http://www.hostesscakes.com/images/logo_all.jpg

As for being a Floor Director, Laurie would have to know hand signals to the anchors.
One requires holding either your left or right hand at eye level in the form of a "C".
What does this hand signal tell the anchors?

Points lost if you confuse it with what you do to your husband after a night out bar-hopping.

Man, I’m sorry to be late to the party, but this is priceless and my deepest appreciation to all the Medialiners who made it just this priceless. You guys are worth your weight in quad reels!

Orbiter/Shuttle arguments come to mind.

I did some time on the Gulf Coast many years ago.
I knew a lady that lived in Evergreen and I would drive up a few times a month to visit. I would take the scenic route out of Florida through Century, Flomation and Brewton.
On one weekend, Ala/Auburn were playing.

Nobody in the streets. No cars to speak of on the streets.
Everyone was home either watching the game on TV or listening to it on the radio.

One stop had me going into a convenient market.
Again no cars to speak of, but the employees had the game up LOUD on the radio.
The definition of Rivalry, in Webster should be one short sentence:
"Alabama vs. Auburn. Get it? "

Roll Tide!
