Ex-BBC journalist arrested in Singapore on drug charges faces 20 years jail and 15 strokes of the cane

A former BBC journalist faces up to 20 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane after being arrested in Singapore for alleged drug offences.

Peter Lloyd, 41, an Australian who has worked in Britain for the BBC and British Sky News, is said by Singapore authorities to have supplied a Singaporean man with drugs and to have tested positive for amphetamines.

Mr Lloyd is now a well-known face on Australia's equivalent of the BBC, the Australian Broadcasting Commission, working from New Delhi as the network's South Asian correspondent.

Police from Singapore's Central Narcotics Bureau arrested Mr Lloyd on Wednesday after a tip off.

Last night the bureau said Mr Lloyd had supplied a local man with drugs and he had also been caught with 0.8g of methamphetamine, one smoking pipe and six syringes. A urine test for the drug had also tested positive, said police.

An ABC spokesman said Mr Lloyd was in Singapore on leave from his post in New Delhi.

The network's director of news, John Cameron, said he had been advised by the Foreign Affairs Department that Mr Lloyd had been arrested and was likely to be charged with drug-related offences.

'The ABC has not been told the full details of the case, but we were aware that Peter had been undergoing hospital treatment in Singapore for a serious eye infection which he contracted while on leave,' said Mr Cameron.

Singapore shows no mercy to people convicted of drug offences and anyone convicted of carrying or supplying narcotics judged to be a commercial amount is sent to the gallows, whether they are local people or foreigners.

While the amount Mr Lloyd is alleged to have been found with is not a commercial quantity, he faces many years in jail and a lashing with a bamboo cane if convicted.

He joined the ABC in 1988, working in the Sydney TV newsroom for three years before moving to Britain to work for the BBC and British Sky News.

In 2000, he returned to ABC television news and later worked for a radio current affairs programme.

He has been the ABC's South Asia correspondent since 2002 and makes regular TV appearances on news and current affairs stories.

ABC journalist Peter Lloyd released from bail in Singapore (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24068757-661,00.html)

VETERAN ABC journalist Peter Lloyd has been freed on bail after being charged with drug offences in Singapore.

The Australian faced Singapore's subordinate courts and was released after a friend posted a surety of $45,000.

Before his release from custody, he faced a 10-minute court hearing wearing an orange shirt, his gaze fixed on the magistrate throughout the hearing.

Several members of Lloyd's family have arrived in Singapore to offer support.

Lloyd, the ABC's South Asia correspondent, also met television executives for the first time yesterday.

Outside the court, ABC news director John Cameron said the television station had "put in appropriate measures as a duty of care in the first instance".

"Peter's defence from here on in is obviously a matter for him," he said.

Cameron said Lloyd appeared to have recovered from an eye infection that saw him spend part of the week he'd been in custody at a medical centre at Changi prison.

Lloyd has been charged with trafficking about a gram of methamphetamine to a Singaporean for $75 at a hotel this month.

He also faces a charge of being in possession of about 1g of the variety of methamphetamine known as ice.

If convicted, the New Delhi-based reporter faces up to 20 years' jail and five to 15 lashes with a cane.

Lloyd, who separated from his wife 18 months ago, was in Singapore to receive treatment for his infected eye.

Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith, who is in Singapore for an Association of South-East Asian Nations forum, said consular officials were doing what they could for the 41-year-old reporter.

"Everything we can do for Mr Lloyd is being done," Mr Smith said.

"Australian officials continue to render consular assistance. The treatment of his medical condition is appropriate.

"We now simply await the normal judicial and legal processes to continue."

Lloyd is due to face court again tomorrow for what is considered to be a procedural mention of his case.

Concerns were held that if yesterday's bail hearing were delayed beyond normal court working hours Lloyd would be required to spend another night in prison.

He must remain in Singapore and report to the Narcotics Bureau three times a week under conditions of his bail.

Means that he has to do any further reports in an orange shirt.
