I'm consulting with a former police officer on educating cops about the do's and don'ts of dealing with the media. Wondering if any of you might have videos of cops displaying their behavior, good and bad, and sharing it with me. I've read and scene plenty of examples here, and I have some from my own shop and from past years.

I'm in a unique position to educate police departments and officers about how to deal with media. The former police officer I'm working with is a nationally known expert on fraud and has made a second career of educating officers about law enforcement techniques regarding fraud and media issues.

So before the flames start, he asked my advice about dealing with media--because he trusts me. That is why I ask for your help with video profiling cops acting right, or cops acting wrong.

And I know you're going to ask. How much am I getting paid? Nothing. I don't know the money changing hands between the law enforcement people. I saw it as an opportunity to educate police officers about what we do. I just need some pictures. Thanks.

If you have this kind of video, whether it has aired or not, please pm me.

Thanks

Somewhere I have some - on an old 3/4 inch tape. While I was news director in Rochester, NY, we collected video of photographers being hassled by citizens and police, both. We had one reporter, Jim Redmond, who did a regular training session with the Rochester PD on media relations during their academy training.

I will look around. Might be a problem getting it into a format you can use, if I do find it.

I think every cop gets media relations training in the police academy. I know I did. We are trained to clam up and let the bosses handle it or designate one of us to handle it providing as little real information as possible.

Too many reporters want to make news stories out of the cops rather than the news makers they’ve arrested. Cops don’t trust reporters except very few they may know and like.

Police agencies want and need publicity to keep public support. They do too much media ass kissing.
I tell every cop he needs a reporter friend to help him deal with media issues. Every reporter needs a cop friend to advise about the cops.
I’d advise things like softball games between cops and reporters to lower the wall of distrust. Good cops hate bad cops and any reporter that suggests that an entire department is somehow bad because of the acts of a few.
