Has anyone ever noticed that ALL police dispatch (usually women) sound the EXACT same. I just now got my scanner back up and running.. lightning hit to an outdoor antenna... and I never noticed. I live about 15 miles south of Louisville... and until recently, I couldn't get my local police dispatch, only metro Louisville. I got it fixed, and now that I'm listening to both dispatches of Louisville Metro (all of Jefferson County) and my local dispatch ... I can't tell a difference between the dispatches. I have to look at my scanner to figure out whether it was Metro, or my local dispatch. Really weird. Really weird post too.. I know. lol.

10-4.

Over time, the voices start to stand out to the point where you know which agency is on the radio just by the voice... no looking at the scanner needed.

When I worked overnights, my favorite scanner traffic consisted of off-the-wall police calls that would, occasionally, get the dispatcher giggling on the radio.

Then, at 2am, when the FOX station played Cops reruns, a Birmingham precinct dispatcher would hold the mic up to the TV and play "Bad Boys" for all the officers to hear.

Roger Roger.
Back when I worked the A.M. shift, dispatch/officer/city workers with radios would hold the mic open during certain songs. "We are family" played a few times.

I say this and I have heard (just in the past 2 hours of getting my scanner working again) Foot chase, officer had a crash, Officer needs assistance, Patrol car struck from behind while on scene of a crash (turned out to be false), "Male threatening to kill white female and then run her a$$ over." - Just now. Gotta love Louisville! If you are coming to the conference in October, bring a handheld scanner.. exciting stuff!

Edit: and a Level 2 Hazmat.. what ever that is. I don't know what it is though, something about gas, asphalt, and a chemical used in blacktopping. <shrug> Oh and a MALE named "Silky". Lastly, a learner's permit being suspended... he is now on the way to jail.

10-4 on this, though I can often tell which office is communicating by hearing men speak.

On this issue...I've always been curious, how loud are your newsroom scanners?

Physically, we have a decent size newsroom, with a smaller staff. I always figure if someone is sitting at that desk, make sure that person can hear clearly and the rest will hear alright. Maybe crank it up if you'll be around the corner. But there are still some people who crank each scanner up so that it will resonate in your head the entire drive home...and I'm across the newsroom.

Anyways, 10-8, 10-19.

A side note, the other day my reporter called TPD dispatch to get some info on a stabbing. The person who answered said she wasn't at her computer and couldn't check right then.

We were kind of interested in what would happen if she had answered a 911 call wherever she was (probably either the break room or the bathroom).

The reporter called 911 to get information?:( Ya think 911 calls get directed to certain extensions/desks and "non-emergency" calls can go somewhere else?

We have 6 scanners at the Assignment desk. Over the years, each newsroom scanner junkie has fooled with the programing, locking out some channels, adding unwanted others..sometimes you needed it for some special purpose but now the story is over etc So now our system is totally fubar. Its going to be a monumental task to re-program them all to the original set up.

Because of our unique location, we get scanner traffic from 4 states and two countries. Makes for some interesting listening, especially at night when the police bosses are not around. We have a PD dispatcher here who called a couple of units out for a domestic fight....and told the responding units "her old man is tuning her up pretty good". Meaning he was beating her badly...also heard him describe a vehicle as a "**** brown pontiac"...I couldnt believe he said that on the air!

Here in Louisville.. they just spent some ridiculous amount of money to centralize the entire emergency communications system into one large system with a LOT of people... it's called MetroSafe. EOC is there... Dispatch.. everything. Pretty nice to tell ya the truth.

I recently heard an EMS dispatcher giggling as she dispatched a medic unit for a 350lb female with an anal itch.

I had to go into the newsroom a few years ago while working dayside to ask the ND about an Amber Alert we had recieved. He had the scanner up so loud, I looked at him and said, "you wanna turn that down so I can talk to you ?" I have been a scanner owner for years, but that was absurdly loud !:frustrated:
