Yet another holiday and I have to work my normal shift. I think the producers on the front lines every day should get holidays off. What do you do in your shop? Thanks in advance.
We make producers work double-shifts on holidays to cover for everyone else we give the day off.
In my shop we all leave at 3PM the day before the holiday and the station goes black for 36 hours. You should suggest it to you ND. After all, no one watches TV on the 4th of July.

Yeah, I agree. Just run the news from the day before, no one will notice.

What you need to do is send out a memo demanding that you have the day off and follow it up with individual phone calls to each person on staff. If they don't answer their phones then follow up with another memo.

I'll be outside all day playing with my kids, grilling out, drinking cool beverages and taking in a fireworks show. Saturday I'll be playing golf and grilling out some more. Sunday I think I'll play with the kids and take a nap here or there.
Just make sure you run those "fireworks are dangerous" pieces... I'll make sure to miss those...along with all the other things on TV that day.

We produce two of each newscast on the 3rd. The second one isn't live-- it only goes to tape for the next day.
We usually estimate the number of fireworks injuries, show some file footage of the St. Patrick's Day parade, and wrap up the rest of the show with sales-generated pieces from car lots and such.
I'm sure it's not too late to write a memo with this idea.

Amazing idea.
But even more realistically ... how about an "I Love Lucy" marathon?

Egbert....this is the big break you've been waiting for. Send out a memo announcing that you're assuming the position as News Director for the day and let everyone see you shine.

I'll be working Friday as well, but I'll be out in plenty of time to enjoy some barbecue and fireworks. As an added bonus, very little traffic for my commute.

Meh, I just tell the ND to pencil me in to work on holidays. Let the personnel who have families have the day off. I'm single, so I don't mind. Plus, I avoid all the suits in the station, and avoid the drunks out on the road.

I'll be seeing if I can get anyone to buy me a beer or two. Big beers.

Since I'm in laid off mode, this Fourth of July will be the first holiday in YEARS where I won't have to work. Yaay!

You're a good man, Produce! If I were at your station and was able to have a holiday off because of selflessness like yours, I would certainly appreciate it!

We're having our annual 4th of July car shoot at the club tomorrow.
There will be at least three 50 Cal BMG and one of these

If there is a better way to symbolically honor the founding of the US I can't imagine what it would be.

I've just now realized I've typically worked a greater number of winter holidays than summer. This year it's the other way around, which I realize is worse....well, I don't mind either too much, I don't have a big family or anything here.
Winter - forecast probably isn't complicated, no one's watching...eat lots of food indoors at relative's...watch for the end of the third quarter, right as everyone's ready to nap...drive back to station
Summer - it's hot, slight chance of a thunderstorm...listen to everyone else's pool and lake parties, possibly attend, can't drink, sweat some...thunderstorms start popping...rush back to the station for the day. Realize even fewer people are watching.

I'm here today too. I don't have a huge problem with it other than our station treating today like anyone will actually be watching. Most people will be sleeping in this morning.
