Okay, hear me out. As much as I love the idea of Prince hitting his second career ITPHR, I think this is a scoring travesty. And I've played (and scored) baseball for years. I was always taught to score a play so that, "Each base must be accounted for."
What's to prevent the offical scorer from ruling that a double and a two-base error? A double is all Prince deserves anyway. And Rios deserves an error on that play as well. As soon as he failed to see the umpire throw up his hands to declare "dead ball", he's gotta dig that ball from under the pad and throw it back in.
Think about it. Let's say a SS goes deep into the hole to knock down a ground ball. The batter reaches first, then advances to second while the SS simply stands there, staring down at the ball at his feet. You sure couldn't rule that a double. IMO, the same thing applies to Prince today.
Or am I wrong?
