I had this solid reporter who was rolling along, and then about a month ago, hit the skidz and is acting like he's never done this before.
I'm working really hard not to be a douchebag.
If you swallowed a bottle of stoopid pillz what would you want someone to do to you to snap you out of it?

There might be a personal problem you are unaware of. If you are pretty tight with him, I would take him aside in PRIVATE and ask if theres anything wrong and can you help him out. That would open the door.
Maybe its just that hes switched suppliers for his weed and the new stuff is a little stronger!:shifty:

Does he have a significant other? What I've done in these cases is contact the boyfriend or girlfriend or spouse of the problem reporter and slyly let them know what's going on. Then, slowly they reporter will get the message without you having to talk to them directly. In one case the reporter didn't have a significant other so I called her mother.

What?!?!? Maybe if you work in Mayberry and everybody knows everybody in the small town. But generally going to someone's family with a work problem is a terribly in appropriate idea.
Is it THAT bad to be honest and upfront with someone?!? I think they're prefer that to hearing you called their mother!
If people noticed my work was slipping on a regular basis, I would certainly want to know they thought that.

or the person could be feeling contract pressure if the deal's up soon and his/her job is in jeopardy.

If he's normally solid and just starting to slip, it's likely something outside of work that you couldn't control. Which makes talking to him kind of difficult. If something specific happens (botches an interview, etc) quietly and discreetly pull him aside, ask what happened. Then ask if everything is ok, he seems to be out of it lately. If its a real problem, making him feel bad that his work-life is in trouble will only make him feel worse.
On the other hand, he could just be getting lazy.

Here's an idea that I did once: Have him work all day on his story and then refuse to air it. Believe, me-- that might just be the wake up call he needs.

Maybe you took the pills or stopped taking them? Perhaps he wasn't as solid as you thought?

I heard stoopid pills are stronger than stupid pills, hence the 2 o's.

But does he still answer his cell phone? (http://openline.medialine.com/showthread.php?t=23916)
Because that's the important thing.
