National Post: Not dead yet: CBC continuing negotiations for HNIC theme (http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/postedsports/archive/2008/06/09/not-dead-yet-cbc-continuing-negotiations-for-hnic-theme.aspx)

The theme has been part of HNIC for 40 of the show's 56 years on the air and has been called Canada's "second national anthem." Last week's announcement that the song would no longer be played before games sparked a nationwide uproar. The CBC was swamped with e-mail and telephone complaints, an online petition was launched, and objections were voiced by Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach, legendary hockey broadcaster Howie Meeker, and hundreds of ordinary Canadians.

The broadcaster suggested there would be a national contest to come up with a new theme for Hockey Night in Canada, but remained hopeful that negotiations could continue.

This is Canada's second national anthem for crying out loud. It would be equivalent to turning on Monday Night Football and not hearing "dah-dun-dun-DAHHH" or the Olympics without "Dunnn-DAHH-dah-dun-dah-dah-dun."

And the CBC shouldn't be getting all the blame in this. The song's composer should back off her demands and realize this song is a source of national pride, not just a cash cow for her.

Maybe Don Cherry can cut back on his tailoring budget and chip a few bucks in to save this theme.

HL:CTV buys rights to former `Hockey Night in Canada' theme song

TORONTO, ON -- CTV has acquired the rights to the song that's been CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada" theme for the past 40 years.
CTV and Copyright Music and Visuals, the company that controls use of the classic song composed by Dolores Claman, announced Monday afternoon that CTV acquired all rights to the song in perpetuity.

The network says it will use the song on NHL broadcasts on TSN, RDS and during the broadcaster's coverage of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
CTV says it made an agreement in principle Friday with Copyright Music and Visuals after CBC announced a contest to find a new theme song.
The contest announcement followed months of negotiations that failed to result in a new licensing agreement between CBC and the agent.

CBC's licence to use the song expired at the end of the Stanley Cup final last week.

Well, I guess it's better than nothing, but you have to wonder what's going on with the sports gurus at CBC.

First they lose the CFL rights.
Then they lose the rights to all of the big curling events.
Now they fumble away the rights to their most iconic piece of music.

If this keeps up, Canadians without cable (and Americans near Canadian border towns) are going to be seeing a lot of downhill skiing and equestrian events on weekend afternoons.

What's next, changing the name of Tim Horton's? Renaming Molsons Canadian to something like Bud of the North?

There are some things about Canada that simply must not be changed...and I'm glad CBC saw the error of their ways...

Too bad Roundball Rock can't be copywritten by the NBA and used on it's main network carrier....because whoever is in the creative drivers seat at ABC should be sacked.
