View Full Version : The Holy Grail of Rundowns

Hi,
If you could spit on the brass of life and buff it until the Genie of News  appeared to grant you unlimited enhancements to your rundown software, what would they be?
Don't be shy about those wants and needs. Let your imagination run riot. Perhaps try listing what you already like or dislike about the rundown software you've already used and then design your perfect system.
You never know, your dreams may just come true someday.

A software that could determine if "This just in" is actually "Just in" or "Just written."
A program that would not allow absolute words... like "worst."
How about a pop message that says... "Are you sure you want to belittle this subject matter by making the story all about the fact your anchor was the host?"
A program designed so if any sentence begins with "a story you won't believe..." the software immediately finishes it with "... so we won't tell you about it because really why would we waste time telling you something you won't believe."
and last but not least...
Add something that makes a producer appear a little bit happy, maybe even a little excited, about their own show. Something to remove that "I'm just staring at a bunch of s**t I've just stacked on top of another bunch of s**t I've just stacked on top of another buch of s**t I've just..."

What the h3ll.. I'm at work and bored, so I'll play.
I love ENPS. The ONLY thing I would like is when I highlight copy in a script, if the software would show on the status bar or somewhere the runtime instead of having to right-click and select "Time Selection."
iNews does this, and that is the ONLY thing I like about iNews.

A jewel in the crown. It glitters on it's own, but in a sea of ideas it sparkles. More. More. More.

Okay, I guess I'm not realizing exactly what spam is. I see people asking simple, stupid questions, usually with less that 5 posts to their credit. But there's no link to anyone's website. So, what makes it spam?

Guess you're right, Produce. It was late and I was tired. I should have said "troll, troll, troll, troll, troll, troll, eggs and troll."

Whoa there.
My name is Mike Allen and I work for a small development company in the UK. I didn't realise that posting a question on here would cause such a backlash. Apologies if my question appeared to be stupid or offensive to anyone (and as to the lack of postings, well, everyone has to start somewhere, right). Having read some of the threads on this site, and seen the flavour of responses I thought that I would flower up my question with a bit of fun, however, for those who need plain English, I was just asking for your take on rundown software. If you don't have an opinion on rundown software or think that it can't be improved, then great, I won't expect to hear from you.
If one question regarding news production software is deemed to be spam then so be it.
Have a nice day.

Mike, since you're new here you have no way of knowing that we've recently had a number of first-time posters who were clearly promoting something, which is deeply frowned upon in this community. Don't take it personally -- it's just that we've been annoyed/burned before and tend to be a skeptical bunch.

It's funny, because I can picture everyone 2 years into the future *****ing about how it seems no one asks producers or the like about what THEY need when creating rundown software.
Be nice if ECP and Rambunctious* wern't the only ones who aren't cynical jerks.
*Rambunctious was being a cynical jerk, but it wasn't related to the 'SPAM/Troll' jerks, but in regards to the business.

For the record... my post was from the prospective of a cynical jerk. I feel bad now but I still don't have any helpful input.

I love ENPS too.
But sometimes I *need* more than four rundowns open at a time.
I also hate that it either lowercases or capitalizes on its own, and tries to override my commands. *I* know what the **** I'm doing, thank you.
Also, being able to see the "prior version" of a newly-changed script should be just one click away, rather than a whole menu-select procedure. I need to quickly be able to see what the anchor just changed, so I can un-**** it.

The newest version of ENPS includes a one click prior version button.

Never needed more than four... except maybe on a few odd occasions. Now that I think about it, the rundown window, when not maximized, can only be slid to occupy a maximum of half the screen. I don't like the limit. I'd alsol like to be able to close the middle and right(I think right doesn't close) windows.
Otherwise, ENPS is perfect... 'cept the iNEWS feature that shows block time of highlighted text automatically in a status bar which would be a timesaver to have, esp. when video producing.
I don't mind the show previous versions method.. but I suspect there's probably a hotkey to do it if I read the manual.
iNEWS should be outlawed. It's so incredibly awful.
