Who are your picks for Best and Worst Sports towns/cities/regions?

Boston... hands down. Rabid, intellegent fans that stick through the tough times (See 86 years of shame for the Red Sox).
Perhaps now, the mecca for all professional sports.

Most fairweather - Pittsburgh. There I said it. They were booing the Steelers in the 2nd quarter of the Jags game. When the Pens sucked, they almost moved and/or went bankrupt TWICE. And nobody has given a damn about the Pirates since about 1993 or so even with that nice new stadium. A completely overrated sports town.

Oh, but now that they will have the Gwinnett Braves in 2009 (thanks Doug) the ATL will be a baseball fans fav! ;)

Philadelphia is both the best and the worst sports town. This defies logic, but probably resonates true to anyone from Philly.

Yea... but they go to their sporting event. Atlanta can't sell out playoff games for their teams!!?!? Ridiculous. Atlanta and Miami = Terrible Sports Towns

The Pens games were like empty warehouses when they were losing.

I've always wondered why everyone thinks LA and San Diego are bad sports towns. Seriously.
"the fans arrive late and leave early" -- well geez... go live there, good luck getting to a game on time and then getting home within 2 1/2 hours.....
Dodgers 3-million plus (and for... what???????)
Angels 3-millions plus
Padres 2.5 mil plus
Chargers have sold out for years, even when they sucked with Leaf
Kings... (THE STINKING CAN'T DO A DAMN THING RIGHT LA KINGS! sold out.. every game... every year)
Lakers - well of course, good luck getting a seat
Clippers - near capacity every game...
Plus when I was on XTRA we had the highest rated sports radio station in the nation (course we were the ONLY sports radio station in so cal back then, but still)
Considering there are a gazillion Boston and Philly and New York fans living in Atlanta and Los Angeles, etc
and exactly ZERO people moving from Atlanta and Los Angeles and San Diego to Boston and Philly and New York (for rather obvious reasons)
Look... Detroit is a great sports town... why? because they support winners like the Wings and Pistons? No.. because they keep packing the house to see... the LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok maybe Detroit is a drunk sports town, I dunno...
Could you get a ticket to see the Celtics a year or two ago? just asking.
How about a Pats ticket in the 80's?
Everyone, BUT MIAMI, loves a winner... so Boston is winning. The only team in that town that will sell out regardless is the Bosox. And unlike the other teams they can actually afford to buy a title and not just earn it.
Yes Atlanta is weak... BUT...
Atlanta's teams suck! Hawks???? Thrashers??? Falcons???? and the Braves? well sheesh... come on... what are they.. 1 for 20? how many times you gonna pay to get kissed and then.... well...
Besides. Pro sports is secondary in Atlanta. The day any NFL team gets more fans to a game than they get in Knoxville or Athens or Tuscaloosa is the day the NFL might catch up to college football in the South...
oh wait.. that will never happen.
Oh and the beloved Boston?
Yeah that BC following... whooeee. That's some impressive now!

Yes and no. They support the teams although not rabidly like Boston. They can be lukewarm. Football? You bet, this is TEXAS. But overall? Average.
St.Louis for baseball? It is the best, period.

Ugh. I grew up outside Boston and am a huge Patriots fan, but Red Sox fans are about the worst in sports.
I was a Red Sox fan myself and always loved the stories of the "cursed" Sox fan. Now, after winning the 2004 Series, Sox fans have become insufferable. So much so, that I can't really root for the team anymore.
Their "Yankees Suck" chant the most classless/self-hating chants in sports.
The words "intelligent" and "Red Sox fan", do not belong in the same sentence.

If LA was such a good sports town they would have an NFL franchise.
Don't you think?
Obviously the people with money don't think it is a good sports town when it comes to professional football at least.

But, the Yankees do, in fact, suck. They are simply informing the masses to the obvious.
Individually, I like the Yankees players. Collectively, they are all that is evil and wrong. (No, I'm not bitter.) ;)

Well, I'm not saying they're not evil and wrong. Everyone knows that. I'm just saying what with 26 World Series wins, they hardly suck.

What have you done for me lately?
It's been eight years since the Yanks won a WS. That's like saying today's Montreal Canadiens are the best team in hockey because they've won more Stanley Cups than any other team. They haven't won anything lately, though. The Celtics have 16 NBA titles, but ain't won nothin' since '86.
The majority of the Yankees 26 WS titles (17) were won from 1930-1962. They won 4 in the 90's, 2 in the 70's, and 3 in the 20's.
Today's Yankees suck. Yesteryear's Yankees didn't. Live in the now.

I'm far from a Yankees fan, but they've been in the playoffs for 12 straight years. That hardly sucks.

Columbus, OH - by far the worse! Pro teams are lame & college team's fans are obnoxious. Plus, game related traffic ties up the entire city.
Only upside, Brat's at OSU football games are good.

Only one pro team in C-bus... the Blue Jackets. Buckeye fans (and I'm a Buckeye fan) can be very obnoxious. I however, tend to look at the Bucks more objectively. I picked them to lose against Floriday in the NCAA tournament and lose to LSU in the title game this year.

For baseball, St. Louis is it. Great fans, highly knowledgeable, and very loyal to their red birds. They might needle you a little bit if you're wearing the opposing team's colors, but they won't be an ******* to you like fans in Philly or New York. A great baseball atmosphere. They always show up.
For football, Green Bay. Texas is king when it comes to football across the board, but there is nothing like going to a game at Lambeau Field. Very classy fans and respectful, and they are hardy. One of the best tailgate scenes around. They drink a **** load of beer, but it's like going to a family picnic with a football game happening at the same time.
For basketball, I'm not much of an expert here. But from what I hear, Madison Square Garden is the mecca.
Towns in general: Portland is very dedicated to the Blazers. Seattle fans are very dedicated as well. Denver is underrated, but it's the Broncos town. Chicago has very passionate fans. Oakland loves its teams no matter what. (A's, Raiders, and Warriors) Oakland fans also are a very rowdy bunch, the West Coast's answer to Philly, New York, and Boston.
Places that suck.
LA-yes they draw, but the fans show up in the 3rd inning and leave in the 7th. Oh, and the 2nd largest TV market doesn't have an NFL team. But some will argue USC is the pro team. The Lakers are a show, not a team. Hey, it's Hollywood.
Miami-they don't go no matter who is playing. I've been there a few times when the Dolphins had home playoff games. The games were nearly blacked out because the team could not sell out. In every instance, the team bought the tickets so folks could see the game on TV.
Atlanta-just a bad sports town period.

You can't possibly be from Boston, Northern NY maybe, NJ definately, but not Boston. 1st of all the Patriots have only recently found success, so Patriot fans know nothing about what RS fans went through. You can not compare the two. And we have won 2 WS in 4 years, (with an 86 year drought in between) so we hardly can seem "insufferable" to you. And that "Yankee sucks" chant has been going on longer than 2004 - so your either from NY or have been living away from Boston long enough that you don't know what's going on. Secondly, NY Yankee fans have no love loss for RS either. Have you ever even been to or seen a game in NY on TV, (when the RS are in twn) they are just as confrontational. That's why it is such a storied rivalry. OH and Cinehead, I dare you to repeat any of your rant North of Providence, just to see how long you would last. Ah but you are entitled to your opinions, it would just be fun to see how you would be forced to back track, I don't know - say visiting your hometown. I would love to see that....

Actually, I did grow up here. My dad took me to the first game ever at Schaeffer Stadium where the Pats played, coincidently, the Giants. I've been to tons of Red Sox games. And, while I have lived all over the country, I now work in Boston. In fact, I've work in Fenway Park and Gillette on a regular basis. I have said what I've said here in Fenway Park.
Look, my dad is a Sox fan and I feel for a lot of them. I was over joyed at the 2004 World Series win. Want to know what did it for me? Taking my little cousin (10 years old) to Fenway Park. She likes the Orioles, don't ask me why. Anyway, she wears her Orioles hat to Fenway. The Sox weren't even playing the Orioles, they were playing the Rangers. What happens, Some meathead pours a beer over her head. Class. Like I said, I like a lot of Sox fans, I just hate the meatheads and those that take part in that classless "Yankees Suck" chant.

Sorry you had a bad experience at Fenway. I've been there five or six times, and have had nothing but great experiences. I took my 2 year old boy there this past summer and everyone was great to him!
You're going to have a-hole fans everywhere. Just ask that first base coach that got the crap kicked out of him by two White Sox fans at the Cell. And Yankee fans are notorious for being ill-behaved. Hell, the Bleacher Creatures ridcule other Yankee fans, particularly the ones that sit in the box seats. Sure, Sox fans have their retards too, but you can't condemn the whole of Red Sox nation because one guy got drunk and lost his freakin' guord.

Well that is classless, I would have been really *issed off too, what a jerk. But not all RS fans are like that, most are respectful, and just share the love for the team. Some Boston fans can be like that, but so can Yankee fans and Cleveland fans. As someone who really identified with the 2004 victory, I am protective of all of RS nation. I was that kind of fan who loved the team but never really felt the pain like so many others did all the years they came up short. (I was pretty young in '86 so I don't remember much and 2003 was bad but still I didn't get it) When the RS came back to beat NY and then take the Cardinals in 4 games, it seemed so surreal. I saw people in the bar I was in calling their grandparents on their cell phone (one girl told me she hadn't talked to her grandmother is 6 months) just to share this moment, because of what it meant. They were lucky enough to see it in their life time. That changed me as a sports fan. 86 years - 86 *ucking years, I mean most people don't even live that long. I know now as we won another WS in 4 years - it can never be that special, and for some it's not, but I follow the team through pre-season - 162 regular season games and the post season, that is part of your life, so I know now what it means to be a real RS fan. The guy who poured beer on your cousin is not a real RS fan, or even a good human being.

My experience in good and bad spx towns is like this:
GOOD (i am only judging places I've been)-
NFL- Green Bay (I hate them but they have it figured out). Hands down. Bears are 2nd and Cleveland is quite good too.
MLB- Wrigley and Fenway are a tie for first. Yankee Stadium and Jacobs Field in Cleveland are tied for second.
NHL- St. Paul, with all due respect to Toronto (where I have never been, but hope to see the Leafs soon). Detroit is second, but Red Wings attendance has slipped alot as of late. St. Paul has sold out every Wild game. Ever.
NBA- Detroit. But their chant is ultra annoying.
--------------
BAD (Again only judging places I've been)-
NFL- Miami.
MLB- Miami with Tampa being a close second.
NHL- Chicago. Empty United Center every night.
NBA- Minneapolis. Kevin Garnett is gone, and so are the a$$es in the seats. I actually bought courtside seats on the street for $20 each last time the Lakers were in town.
So stay away from pro sports in Florida. Except for maybe a Bucs game. I have never been but they look fun.
College spx rules the south.
