I think it's pathetic and creates a completely unlevel playing field for these schools that RECRUIT to get stud players. These aren't real high schools, folks. I just wish the sports networks would cut it out with this crap.

And there is NO SUCH THING as a high school "National Championship" - it has even less substance than a BCS Championship.

totally agree.
HS sports are way over-covered and over-glamorized in our society.
it should be a fun pressure-free endeavor for teenagers.
instead it's become a business run for profit by adults.

I can't believe anyone but a handful of unable-to-travel parents and neighbors are watching it.

I think deep down, we're all waiting for the next, "bingo, bango, bongo."

AMEN!

After all how can there be a "national champion" when I know Texas (and some other states, see below) can't even crown 1 real champion at it's highest level. Here they have a "5A Division I" champ and a "5A Division II" champ! Don't ask, it's retarded and all about money....I know, what a shock!

I think California has 3 state champs; a north champ, a central, and a south.

The scary thing is we're not seeing less high school coverage nationally, it's more. I've noticed cnnsi.com has added a ton of HS coverage over the past couple of years. Also, do they really need 3 HS "All-American" games....oh wait, it goes back to that money thing, DUH!

Statewide coverage is a great thing. For instance, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (http://www.wiaawi.org) has opened up a TV/web operation (http://www.wiaa.tv/) that gives you more access, usually over the web. Some cable companies are picking it up on-demand, too.

As low-budget as the productions tend to be, I'm glad to see the interest in televising high school sports that, frankly, the vast majority of kids would play in anyway just to PLAY, be it on TV or not. (Or whether they have a chance in heck of landing a college scholarship or not.)

But national? That's a bit much. With divisions in different states not matching up, how can you compare?

Yeah, here in Virginia it's retarded too - There are 6 state champions. It's absurd and makes little sense: Group A Division 1, Group A Division 2, Group AA Division 3, Group AA Division 4, Group AAA Division 5, and finally Group AAA Division 6. How convoluted and insane is that?

... with schools playing in leagues with similar-sized schools, and state championships being awarded in each division. You don't expect the local junior college to compete with Georgia or USC, and I don't think it's realistic for Sticksville High School (Student body: 308) to play against the largest high school in Kansas City, Chicago or Detroit -- or the largest metro-area schools in whatever state Sticksville High resides.

I just don't think the games, for a variety of reasons, belong on national TV.
