I wanted to do something creative for my sportscast on December 25th. Would anybody like to share what they've done in the past or what might be a good idea?

A loooong time ago in a market far far away... our sports dept. put together a short highlight reel of great plays from HS football the season. We put it to Christmas music... i think it was Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. We slo-mo'ed some of the plays... showed some of the better cutaways... it was pretty neat I thought since there wasn't much to feature on Christmas eve.

Many moons ago, I had 12 members of the local minor league hockey team pair up and had each pair of guys sing two Christmas carols. I then edited it together so each pair sang a different line of the Christmas carol. It was pretty funny and got a lot of good comments from the viewers... especially since the guys were really bad singers.

---with apologies to Clement Clarke Moore and Twins inspiration from Bat Girl---

Twas the night before Christmas, and all thru the Metrodome
Not a trade was stirring, Santana is still at home.

The uniforms were hung by their locker with care,
In hope that Liriano's arm was fully repaired.

The fans were nested all snug in their bed,
With visions of World Series dancing in their heads.

And ma in her custom jersey and I in my Cooperstown cap,
hope no Twins are using that steroid crap.

When out on the field, Nick Punto is a bunter,
And apparently we couldn't afford to keep Torii Hunter.

Taking off to second Alexi Casilla ran like a flash
Carl Pohlad needs to find more cash

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
I see Joe Mauer, decked out in catcher's gear.

With a big Canadian driver, so lively I know
It's that MVP we call Justin Morneau!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
"Is Matt LeCroy still a Twin?" I thought to myself

"Now, Redmond! now, Kubel! now, Cuddyer and Neshek!
On, Rincon! on Baker! on, Monroe and...and Neshek! (Really, what rhymes with Neshek??)

To the top of the porch! to the top of the right field bag!
Now dash away! dash away! Let this season not be a drag!"

And laying his finger aside of his nose,
Smelling RBIs, the boxscore soon rose;

But crowd did exclaim, as the homer drove out of sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Something creative?
Show highlights of your kids opening presents and a post-meal interview with a family member. Could be funny, memorable and allow you to enjoy (some of) the day at home rather than at work. Run scores in the ticker.

Years ago I worked at a station in Ohio where it was SOP for producers to fill out a "descrepency report"... basically a list of what went wrong in your newscast. (They didn't give a hoot what went right... or who went above and beyond the call of duty to make the show great)

So one Christmas eve, we had a fine, mistake-free 11pm show.

So my discrepency report read something like this:

"Twas the night before Christmas and all through channel nine
Not a problem was had, the 11pm show went fine..."

It went on for a few more stanzas, thanking everyone who worked late on Christmas eve... harmless stuff. It was clear the show had no discrepencies.

Some ******* engineering manager sent me a memo about how it was unprofessional, not to do that again. Just write "nothing to report"

I was shocked. What a scrooge I thought. But I kept my mouth shut until like a week later when both the GM and ND told me they thought it was very creative and showed a positive attitude about working the holiday.

I just wish they had sent an email so I could shove it down that engineering manager's throat.

I bet the "engineer" who sent the memo dressed like a homeless man with scabbies and smelled like old cheese and farts.
