How many times have we heard..."all we heard was a pop, pop, pop sound, not thinink it was gunfire"?
Do we need to educate people on what gunshots sounds like? If you hear a noise that sounds like firecrackers in a mall, or school or church or wherever...maybe we should begin to assume that it is gun shots.
Lets all do stories on what a gunshot sounds like...starting with a .22 moviing up to a shotgun or assault rifle so everyone knows what they sound like.

I think it is one of those deals where gun shot sounds from TV and movies end up sounding drastically different (that being, enhanced or whatever) from that of what you might hear live.

We don't need to educate people on what gunshots sound like, but let's be honest: most Americans DON'T know the difference between gunshots or a car backfiring or firecrackers. They should consider themselves lucky.

And hearing gunshots on TV doesn't do the real-life experience any justice. The sounds just do not translate from the TV set.

I'm may just be jumpy like this, but I'm at the point that if it's not near the 4th of July and I hear a pop, I'm damn certain it's a gunshot.

Same reason that, when you interview a witness or victim about the shooting, they always "speak out."

I always wondered why people said "it sounded like firecrackers" too. until i was sitting in my house a few months ago and i heard firecrackers. then i realized they were gunshots. I didn't think anything of what i thought were firecrackers, i have a few kids in my neighborhood, they do stupid stuff all the time.

I think it's mostly a matter of not expecting to hear gunshots, so people think it's fireworks or whatever. we have a few muggings in my neighborhood, but rarely shots fired. and certainly those people in Omaha doing their shopping weren't anticipating they'd hear gunshots at the mall...

guesswhoiam has nailed it. I remember being outside a courthouse where, inside, a crazy man had holed up with a gun. Cops and media and citizens were everywhere (a safe distance away) waiting to see what he'd do. Well, he started shooting. Even knowing he had a shotgun and knowing he might shoot it off, I was surprised by the sound and didn't immediately recognize it as gunfire. Because it's something I'd never heard in those circumstances I didn't know what to expect. It was a lot louder, bassier and thumpier sounding than firecrackers, though. I assume that's because it was a shotgun and that a handgun or rifle would sound different.

The reason you don't recognize the "pops" a gunshots is that, for years, Hollywood has made the sound of any gun firing sound as if it was a cannon.

We can't have Rambo, for example, running around, firing guns in both hands, and have the sound be "pop, pop, pop, pop." That's not exciting enough. So the sound dubbed in is totally unrealistic...but loud and booming, which is what the directors want.

And, thus, anyone who hasn't been around actual gunfire thinks that's what gunshots sound like.

Ever shot a gun? They do sound like canons - when you're standing near one. That's why ear protection is worn at gun and rifle ranges.

But stand 50 - 100 yards away, and they do sound a lot like firecrackers.

This post has turned into an NRA psa for recognizing which gun is being shot at you by Dick Cheney.

God, that is pure genius. Thank you so much for bringing reason and logic to the topic. It's about time someone did. Bless you

If you hear an assult rifle, you know something is wrong. As for handguns, they can sound alot like fireworks. A Pshyco-therapist told me that many people are in a type of denial. They hear it, then try to think of all the things it might be, not taking action because of disbelief.

I have a website that sometimes focuses on a local, breaking news story, and I sit at the computer making calls and listening to live radio coverage and the police scanner and send out updates.

Several weeks ago we had a man with a gun thought to be holding hostages in a local apartment complex. SWAT teams rolled in, fire and EMS took up their places, and a small army of cops was sorrounding the place.

And I'm normally pretty careful out what I pass on in my updates ... as a veteran reporter, I know we all make mistakes and I don't want to pass on someone else's.

But in this case, the radio guy is screaming "Shots Fired ... Shots Fired!" into his mic ... and I can hear the shots in the background as he's saying it. What the hell, I thought, I KNOW he's right about this -- I can hear them -- and so I pass it on as an update to my readers.

But they weren't really "shots" being fired, as in "bullets" -- they were small "concussion" grenades and tear gas.

It was a rookie mistake and embarrassing ... and I will, from now on, make another call and ask "What KIND of shots are we hearing?" Sometimes, they all sound the same.

Because 'ring in' was taken and applies to the New Year.

A little side note, most people claim tornadoes sound like freight trains. Why not passenger trains. Heard a sound bite from lady in Pennsylvania who heard two trains collide.......she said it sounded like a tornado.

I blame it on old TV Westerns. No shot was ever fired that did not ricochet off of something without the classic sound fx!
