Abilene, Texas woman robs bank to "party", then calls TV station, talks to reporter, turns self in to cops while tape is rolling. http://bigcountryhomepage.com/content/fulltext/?cid=3598 link with media player of story. How would your shop handle this?

This was produced as little more than a tease for the 10. Which is OK, I guess, since there was no danger of the competition having it. But I'd have cut it way down.

And the reporter's tendency to look all over the place, side-to-side, up, down, distracting. But by then the story had pretty much run its course, anyway.

Your link's gone bad! I don't know if its fixable though...

So let me get this straight: she robbed a bank and threw a party at the bank? Or did she use the money she took to throw a party?

People get sillier and sillier day by day.

Just checked and the link is still good. Woman walked into a bank Sunday afternoon, got away with the loot. Says she used the money to buy drugs and party. Then calls TV station on Monday, reporter shows up and she calls and turned herself into the cops while he's there...
Question, if your shop got the call how would you handle this?
Play like you're the managing editor, you're in charge here, how would you handle it in your shop?

Trying to get a meaningful discussion going here 'stead of the usual blather (boo hoo my coworkers/news director/assignment producer/station manager hates me, boo hoo I don't make enough money, boo hoo I can't get a job in a larger market because nobody likes my tape....)

Hmmmmmm, a crazy woman who is on drugs and may have a gun or other weapons on her wants an interview. That's easy. I'd send the pain in the ass reporter that everyone hates in the newsroom. Most newsrooms feature a reporter like the one I'm talking about here. He/She rubs everyone the wrong way and is not good enough to move on to a bigger market, so your stuck with them for the long haul. If things go well, maybe the crazy bank robber chick will take care of your problem.

Most stations would have offered the robber a producer's job.

I wonder what the police station thought of the News Team getting their first....then calling them. Because the story leads you to believe the station called police right after the crook calling the news, but the camera's were already in the hotel room. Kinda hard to believe they beat the police to the hotel.

hmm... what happens if you get to the hotel room and she has a change of heart - or takes your camera (or you) at gunpoint. Rarely should you become part of the story, but sometimes it's inevitable (anyone remember the texas seven turning themselves in to an anchor in colorado springs)

I think I would have called the PIO while I was on my way to the hotel.
