Might producing the morning show someday earn you hazard pay?

This article (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071129/ap_on_he_me/night_shift_cancer) from the AP details the mounting evidence between working the graveyard shift and going to an early grave due to an increased cancer risk.

Did this study even consider how climate affects this as well? For instance, those countries along the Arctic Circle have a lot of "dark" time. Is there an increased risk of cancer among these people? If one looks at the body's circadiam rhythm, then look at the effect of sunlight as well.

I wonder if the lack of sunlight is counterbalanced by the amount of time I sit in front of the lights on the set.

The article suggests that the problem is not that the body doesn't get enough light, it's that it doesn't get enough darkness.

Well thank God I don't work nights so I can go out in the daylight and get skin cancer from the sun.:p

I think we ought to slap a warning label on it, tax the hell out if, and ban it from all public buildings and private restaurants.

Hmmmmmm, I figured it was the 3 years I spent working at a TV station where my desk in the weather center and the station's archaic transmitter were separated by only a thin piece of dry wall that gave me cancer and not the years I spent working mornings.

I thought my 3 years on the morning shift was going to kill me!

Overnights are just abusive to the human body. I know when I was on that shift, I gained a tremendous amount of weight. I also had two small children at home, and I was tired ALL the time. When you are tired like that but can't take a nap or just sleep, you tend to reach for high-carb food to give you an energy boost. You don't even realize you are doing it. You're too tired to exercise either. I know it works for some people who are disciplined enough to exercise and eat right, but man-- working those god-forsaken hours makes it even harder to take care of yourself.

This report doesn't surprise me a bit.

I think the overnights made me gay.

Should be culled from the company's group health insurance, or at least pay higher premiums to reflect their decision to expose themselves to the liklihood of cancer.

I shouldn't have to pay for their poor decisions.

Good heavens Matt!!! Should the CDC look into this?

I did mornings for 25+ years before moving to New York and WCBS in 2006. I now anchor afternoons.

I've lost nearly 35 lbs. in the 15 months since I left mornings.

No more work-lunch-nap-dinner-sleep pattern!

I think it's a very good reason to do away with morning shows all together! I always thought that no one should be up at that hour. It's inhuman.

The time I worked that shift, I was tired and sick all the time. I actually thought I might have chronic fatigue.

you know that is never gonna happen, it's really the only show that has any growth at all.

Is it too simplistic to say that workin' goofy hours just can't be good for most people?

The eat-and-sleep patterns for those who work nights and early mornings are killers.

I'm not in the news business anymore (and never worked overnight when I was) but my bail-bond business causes me to work overnight-early morning hours.

As Steve says ... it's work, lunch, nap, dinner, sleep. And that 35 lbs he lost? I think I know where he can find it.

But how much of that is attributable just to living in New York? Everyone I know who moved to New York lost weight (myself included: I dropped from 190 to 160 just from all the walking.)

Good point, Spike. NYC is a great walking town. Walk to the train...walk to work from the train...etc.

But, I really am eating much better.

Is that because the NYC Food Nazi's won't let you enjoy anything made with delicious trans fat.
