Robert Michael Fenwick Jr., who died Nov. 18 at Indiana University Hospital after a brief battle with cancer, had been a longtime TV weather forecaster and anchor but mainly worked behind the scenes during his seven years in Indianapolis public radio.
"He was a producer for 'The Art of the Matter' for seven of its eight years," said Sharon Gamble, a co-host of the weekly arts program. "In the early morning hours, he also was the person you hear on the air during breaks in syndicated programming, and he served as the news voice. He really enjoyed the news."
Fenwick, 59, returned to his professional roots when he got back into radio about 10 years ago in Lexington, Ky. He had gotten his start during the late 1960s at a radio station in his hometown, Lebanon, Ky.
Fenwick spent roughly two decades with commercial and public TV stations. He was a weather forecaster on WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, an anchor in Denver and a host of "PM Magazine" in St. Louis and Greensboro, N.C.
"It was always kind of cool to see my brother on TV," said his younger brother, Lee Fenwick, who lives in Kansas City, Mo. "I remember growing up, watching him do the weather in Cincinnati. He covered the winter of '78. There's a picture of him in front of the frozen Ohio River."
Lee Fenwick said his brother was diagnosed with cancer fairly recently and survived a liver transplant in 2004. While recovering from the transplant, he got back into his old hobby of painting and drawing. He also was an avid traveler.
Other survivors include his parents, Robert Michael Fenwick Sr. and Joan Margaret Fenwick, and a sister, Kimberly Ann Bowling, all of Louisville, Ky. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to WFYI-FM.
