Here is a news article I found interesting:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/09/01/tonights_top_story_tv_news_fanatics/

My take: I am merely an observer of TV news, I do not work in TV news or anything like that, but I do find it a bit peculiar and a bit strange that some
people like the ones mentioned in this story would obsess over something like TV news. There are people who obsess over things like anchors, and also production elements such as sets, graphics and theme music. They even obsess over certain stations. I just find it very hard to believe to be honest. I've talked to some of them, and while some have been a pleasure to talk to, others have just come across as arrogant and petty. Personally, I don't pay a lot of attention to local news, I find what happens at the networks to be more interesting, but I was at one point part of that crowd who thought about things like I just mentioned. Today I just find it strange. Any thoughts?

I found that a lot of these people consider local news folk the closest they'll come to meeting what they consider a celebrity. They see our lives as exciting and action packed:sleep: It doesn't matter if we do the news at 6am in market 150+, we're on TV. Bloggers are a form of entertainment reporter. We had a guy out here pre-blogging era, who wrote for a quazi lifestyle magazine about the nightlife of local reporters. "So and so was having a good time out a _____ the other night", stuff like that. We have people out here who comment on hair colors/styles and choices of ties.
We also have the scanner hounds (every market does) who call about anything and everything. Sometimes they're on to something, other times it's much about nothing. They call in because they feel they're contributing to the news. " Hey I told them about that!" They want to be part of the "inner circle". Me, I keep trying to get out of that damn circle, but they keep pulling me back in!:D

I guess since it's mainly young men watching and blogging, the hottie quotient will rise on local news broadcasts.

If local news "sucks", stop b!tching and do something about it. Work at a tv news station and make a difference. I will give you props for at least saying you want to get news and talk to people around town.

local news sucks, unless you live in a BIG city,....

No difference really. BIG city or SMALL city, the news pretty much looks the same. Most of the stories, or story types and certainly story styles are almost the same. Maybe a SMALL difference in the anchor quality, but basically the same stories covered the same way. Advances in technology allow smaller stations a bigger look. As a result, thanks to consultants, they all look about the same, which most of the time, sucks about the same.

that article is a good example of why TV news in some form will always survive.

there's a lonely element of people out there who think the anchor or weatherman is their friend and want to see what they're wearing.

no idea how big that group is.... but it's loyal.

My opinion:
Aren't these people the same as the general public? Aren't you competing for THEIR viewing?
The only difference is that they publish their work in blogs.
Go to myspace- I bet there's blogs there picking at dumber things!
I'm glad there's critics for the news- God knows we need more of them in today's industry!
