Anyone have any advice about moving from an on-camera job to an off-camera job?

What is your current capacity. Are you an on-air reporter or anchor? Are you not happy with your current position? What skills do you have for behind the scenes?

Need a little more info to determine what could possibly work.

I did not want to do the on-camera for long because you always have to be "on" when your're out in public or just trying to have a moment to yourself. For me I like the behind the scenes as a Producer and eventually manager because I was able to control the copy and images a little more.

There are some other plus's as well but ask yourself the above questions first before you make the change.

Good Luck!

Gees you are for certain gonna take a huge pay cut. Think this one over carefully, its far easier to go this way than it is to go from off camera to on camera!

Remind the hiring manager what it is about your current on-cam position that make sense in an off-cam position. Put yourself in their shoes - what's in it for them to move you off the air? Have you demonstrated good leadership skills in breaking news situations? Do you have the respect of the rest of the staff. Is it a good move for the station? Answer those questions when you apply.

If you're in front of the camera currently...walk around to the other side.

Thanks, I'll be here all week.

Kind of a wide open question. A little more detail would help.

Exactly. This person doesn't deserve a legitimate response if she's not going to ask a real question.

I'll echo what Clubbeat, Bureau Chief and Mr. Pants have said. Ask yourself the questions. Think about it long and hard. Talk to some of your professional friends outside your own station. Find someone you know and trust who has made this move and solicit their counsel.

... But I'm not certain the original poster was implying he or she had a choice. My first reaction was he/she was being reassigned to a positon behind the camera. I'm probably wrong, though.

The other piece of info I think we need is here is A) Whether the off-camera job is at the same station, and 2) Whether the off-camera job is in news. It could be at at a production company or doing corporate vids. I think we need to know that before doling out any advice/opinions.

Although, being one of those who DID go from on-camera (news) to behind the camera (non-news), there is a paycut.

you save money on "make up"... and you don't care if the people at Burger King recognize you, or not.
