IE, surfed Monster, got a job in Chicago, NYC, LA, etc. (or whatever way it happened) ... for PR, marketing, etc. Reasons? How'd you go about it?

I got my first "out of the industry" job through ShopTalk. Sent Don Fitzpatrick an e-mail about my closed down newsroom, and was contacted by a broadcast software company in the area within days.

Second job came from networking.

Third one was dumb luck; I happened to come across an online ad on a radio station website.

Here's my question: I'm trying to move out of my current city to another, possibly for PR or marketing jobs, but I just don't know how seriously they'll take someone who's not from that city AND already not working in the field (I know a ton of reporters that have transitioned from journalist to PR in that town, but obviously this will be different).

Any tips? PM if you'd like. Thanks!

Make sure you have some PR experience on your resume, even if it's on a volunteer basis for a non profit. I did that and had no problem with the transition.

I'm going to quit the business because I have a great idea for an invention. I'm going to create some plastic barrels and paint them orange with a reflective strip. They are weighted down with a heavy rubber ring. Highway construction crews can use them during construction to block lanes and divert traffic. What do you think?

You can say "it doesn't count" because I worked in the Production department, but I left TV for good a long time ago. I remember writing something in here about why I wanted out quite a long time ago, and getting Kudos from Barkie about my reasoning.

In the end, I simply got tired of the emphasis on local crime, as well as the unpredictability and reliance on so many other people for my own job security (having been laid off from one station). Besides, the pay did suck, and I had gotten bored with it.

I work in IT now. And it's what I should have invested my free time into a lot earlier than I did...but at least I did before it was too late.

If you've just helped out here and there, then it really would be fudging. Find a group that has some big spring event or summer fund raiser and offer to help write their releases. Then you can claim you've done the work before. It doesn't take alot of time and you could help a good cause while building your resume.

Make sure it is what you really want because it will be hard to go back. I left the biz to care for my girls for a couple of years. I had also moved to a large market area and knew it would be too competitive. Anyhow...I started looking into P.R. and did get a marketing job for a non-profit. I really enjoyed it and all I had on my resume was tv news experience beside college jobs so it is possible..just have to find the right fix. Since then I have moved again and got the rare opportunity to do some freelance in tv again but I am starting from the ground up again and that can be very difficult after you've already put your "time" in... good luck to you!
