View Full Version : One Sports Reporter Not Being a LaRussa Apologist

I knew it would happen. The sports reporters on ESPN are trying to cover for LaRussa. I heard a guy on ESPN this afternoon say "by all accounts, he's not a big drinker. Its just some times, people have one too many."

First off, "one too many" is a huge understatement for someone who is snoozing from boozing behing the wheel. Second, it takes an experienced drinker to get that loaded and even think he can drive.

Here is one reporter who is slamming him and St. Louis.

Oh, that's a great read. Needs to be more like that one.

I like this line from the article:

If ever you needed proof that there were a lot of morons cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals, this is it!

Actually we get plenty of proof every baseball season... especially last year when the Cards actually managed to win.

How'd he choke down that much booze?

This guy needs to calm down the next time he writes a blog. I understand his frustration over the lack of seriousness DUI/DWI's get nowadays, and cheering LaRussa hours after his arrest borders on despicable. However, this guy shouldn't point the hypocrisy too vigorously at the St. Louis media or LaRussa. First of all, anything short of a complete admonition from the St. Louis media was going to tick this guy off. The same reason part of the STL media may have put a softer edge on the story is the same reason a HOUSTON reporter might put a sharper one it. Secondly, his PETA comparison is downright laughable. He was just looking for a way to call the LaRussa hypocrite and this was the best he could come up with. That being said, LaRussa will pay the price when it comes to his reputation. Which, is about the worst that will happen to him (legally, the punishment won't be that bad, which is a shame). There is no doubt he is one of the top 5 managers of all time, I don't care what anyone says about that. However, he will always be remembered for this, and rightfully so, mistakes shouldn;t be erased because you "feel bad."

Well, hopefully LaRussa's DUI arrest will be a wakeup call for him.

Haha, verbal irony.

In an earlier thread, I talked about there being a difference between people who have a few beers, and people who cross the line of drinking too much.

LaRussa is over the line. He's just damn lucky he didn't kill anyone. Bottom line, if he has a drinking problem, he needs to take care of it. If he just made a mistake, he needs to make sure it doesn't happen again.

It always bugs me more when someone as rich as LaRussa does something this stupid. Guys like him could afford having drivers 24/7.

I suspect that home team fans of all the other MLB teams would have applauded if the manager of their team had been busted for DUI.

LaRussa will get plenty of criticism (rightly) for this. I'm not defending the fans or saying its right ... merely pointing out that they were most likely trying to be gracious toward someone they respect.

Since that story broke, our station is considering putting a I-Team unit outside a local bar frequented by "big name" sports figures. The idea is to follow any recognizable players as they leave in their cars and call them in to the police as "a weaving driver". We follow and when they get stopped.....BINGO...we've got the lead story.

We just got a sneak preview of the new Cardinal Mngr's 2007 Season uniform.

Funny ... I had just the opposite reaction. A .093 BAC isn't that big, and anyone who passes out from that amount of alcohol alone, isn't much of a drinker to begin with.
