View Full Version : Explaining Caucuses

With our election season gearing up, I'm starting to work on plans for our station. One of my biggest problems right now is trying to explain the Caucus idea to the viewers. Anyone have tips on how to break it down? How much detail do you go into? Do you talk about how many delegates for each presinct? Do you explain the delegate election process, and the fact that they're non-binding (for our state, at least)? What types of visuals did you use? Just looking for some ideas from those who've done this before with success.

Good luck. In my opinion, if you can turn something as boring as 'explaining caucuses' into something interesting and visual, you should get some kind of 'newsman of the week' award.

Gee, it must have been four years ago... George Stephanopolous did a great explaination of the Iowa caucus.
If I remember, they had groups of people - holding red or blue signs... going from one group to another to show how the votes weighed.
(I can't remember it in detail.... but I remember understanding the explanation very well and thinking that it was a great way to break it down) I wonder if you can search for the story? Either GMA, Nightline or This Week.
