I understand that to get a digital HD video picture that rivals 35mm film would cost you appx $300k.
Apparently there is a company that has manufactured a digital HD camera for a little over $17k, and the picture is supposed to be twice as good as 35mm film. Have any of you high end photogs seen or used this equipment? And, if so, are the claims about quality true?
BTW, the website is www.red.com (http://www.red.com)

I believe the only person outside the company who has been afforded the opportunity to shoot with a prototype is an ASC cinematographer they brought in to shut down the suspicion that it's vaporware.
And the camera is going to cost you considerably more than $17K. The $17K figure is just for the body.
It doesn't include the minimum of $10K for a zoom lens ($20-30K if you want a good Canon HD lens).
It doesn't inlude the viewfinder or external LCD monitor (which is necessary, since the onboard monitor is obscured by the batteries and magazines).
The body has no recorder, so you have to buy their "magazines," which are modified 80GB Ipods, for $1K each. And they're not going to hold much video at full resolution, so you'll need several.
It doesn't include the "cage" or "rail" systems for mounting other things on it (like batteries and magazines).
It doesn't even include a microphone.
I noticed also that something new recently appeared on their website:

That wasn't there a few months ago, when they were hyping this thing right and left at NAB. It looks as though they're hedging their bets. I wonder if it will really live up to all their claims.
I'll believe it when I see it.
