What do you put on one - just clips of you reading the news or do you need ad copy?

It depends on the kind of VO work you're looking for. I'd put both.

What you want to do, assuming you're looking to make this your living and not just a "side" job, is to show your range. The ads you do, don't have be real ads. If you have access to some audio gear and know your way around Pro Tools or something like it, make some mock ads. Pick a variety of things that show what you can do.

Producers are often looking for voices that aren't overly familiar, so they will take a shot at a new talent if they like what they hear.

Oh and one tip. Don't put anything on you reel that sounds like a reporter vo track. 99% of reporters, even on an network level, are awful at voice overs. To get real voice over work, you need be an actor, not a reporter.
