Oh, I just wanted to pretend I was actually getting courted by a station in a top 10 for once.
Never mind!

Local news in Washington-Baltimore area makes the baby Jebus cry, but I may be biased. If I really want to see the latest drive-by, I'll actually head into the District, thanks!
Great thing about Washington is, I can read cnn.com or msnbc.com or foxnews.com and get all the important local news there.

To give you an idea, here are the top stories on WJLA.COM (ABC-7 news).... RIGHT NOW.
Michael Devlin is due in court. (Wrong State, but whatever, it's apparently a slow news day. For those of you who don't know, viewers have caught on to the fact that people are charged after they are arrested, and that court appearances are usually scheduled.)
Power is back on in Alexandria. (This is almost a real story, but we all know it's really just a lame-ass tie in to the storms in Oklahoma and Texas.)
Marin O'Malley is Maryland's new governor. (Holy crap, who would have seen this coming, what with the election in November and all)
Bus Hits, Kills Pedestrian. It's just a map, with one line: "A missing street sign might be at fault for a pedestrian's death." (Apparently, the big news here is that street signs are not only alive, they might also have a deadly agenda.)

That street sign was not only alive, it also had a deadly agenda.

Washington local news is an embarassment in many ways... entire first blocks devoted to the latest shootings/fires/accidents with full packages devoted to the like. I remember in the 80's when, shootings were just readers or VO's. I feel bad for families affected, etc...but would rather hear about issues that affect a broader audience. That's just me. Same old 'breaking news' banners all the time, even for stuff that is incidental. So it goes, that's the face of local news these days.

Washington may be different from the rest of the U.S., but here, the vast majority of people get their news from Radio, those that don't just turn to the internet.

I lived in Arlington during the 80's as a kid and I remember the news being decent... at least compared to Richmond. I went back to the DC area 2 years ago and was stunned when I watch the local newscasts. Wow. I think WRC had a whopping 4 stories in their 12 minute A-block. The pace of the show was the slowest I've ever seen. And now I hear George Michael is hanging it up... sigh.

Speaking of Radio, wtf happened to Washington Radio this morning?
104.1, the former classical station, is now a radio station called "George", which plays a huge random playlist that seems to be a lot of 70's crap mixed in with 80's and 90's. That sounds a lot like "Jack", the radio station from Baltimore which plays a very similar playlist, and can also be heard in DC.
90.9 WETA, formerly the hardcore NPR station, is now playing classical.
Anyone know where I can listen to NPR now?
Damn you, Bonneville Stations!

Roy, yeah it's fun to be courted, but what if they offer you the gig? Brutal cold in winter, brutal hot & humid in summer. Brutal local crime.
Save 'pretend' for something better -- like Victoria's Secret model scout...

WTOP News moved to 103.5 FM and 107.7 FM, and their old slot at 1500 AM is now called Washington Post Radio, programmed by WTOP people, and is essentially the same stories from WTOP presented with a lot more depth and discussion and guests.
You can still get NPR... I think they are down in the 88.x FM range.
