which comes via Shoptalk.

Arkansas TV News can confirm that KNWA has hired Miss Arkansas USA, Kelly George. ATN is told things are still being worked out as to what time slot she will be given and when she will start. An e-mailer hopes its the early morning anchor spot.

George not only holds the title of Miss Arkansas USA, she is also a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base. According to her website, she is the Deputy Chief of Public Affairs at the LRAFB.

None. Like anyone will be paying attention to anything she says.

Can she read? Yes?

She's hired.

If she is assigned to cover ANYTHING remotely connected to the military, her boss is an idiot.

If she covers education, health, or GA I don't see a conflict of interest.

She's going to anchor.

How can she avoid military stories?

How can she avoid military stories?Anchoring stories about the military is hardly "covering" the story.

It depends.

If she's just a newsreader and has no control over content, there's no issue.

Having a military PIO read the news about the military is almost as bad as having Miss Arizona read it.

Is there something about credibility with the audience that escapes you? One of the reasons people aren't watching local news is that they don't TRUST the content. Why give them another reason not to?

Yeah ... I'm with 2:30. You don't let a government employee read news about the government and not expect to lose credibility.

But I'm willing to give the station the benefit of the doubt and assume they've already made allowances for that.

Wait, will she still be active duty? Or is this is her new career? If she's still part of the military, then yes, 2:30's right (gulp) ... this opens the door to a host of potential problems. Would you hire some 50-year-old male LTC to come in and anchor? And if, as seems obvious, she's only been hired because of her looks, then it's just another gong in the death knell of t-v journalism.

I hope that the next station I work at has the principles to only hire miserable looking hags. Perhaps they can look to the local newspaper to find the talent. Of course that's where all the ugly journalism students I knew landed.

Or they could simply hire attractive people with actual skills and experience (again, I don't know Ms. Arkansas's background). Why must you be ugly to be a good journalist? The point was not to hire someone based solely on their looks. Maybe they can include reading comprehension as one of the key principles at your shop.

No one has discussed her qualifications.

George grew up in Mission Viejo, California and attended Trabuco Hills High School. She later gained a BA in Communications from University of Maryland, College Park, in part paid for by the $25,000 she earned in scholarship money by competing in pageants

So she's a college grad with a BA in Mass Comm. Ready for a market the size of Little Rock? We'll see. But are you arguing that she was hired as much for her experience as she was for her looks?

Did some work with Kelly during a short PR stint...she's nice, but not really anchor material. Young. Very young.

But title helps, as does the military experience.

I see minimal conflict here...but I do see a concern that they'd hire someone with little - to no - professional experience. She wasn't on AF Network, don't know if she interned anywhere...she simply has some (limited) media exposure due to her beauty pageant experiences.

Good luck, she's a nice gal. I'm sure she'll shoot up the ladder successfully.

You can't advocate for organizations and causes, etc. and do a fair and honest job in the news business.
