View Full Version : THANK YOU AND I AM OUT (of news that is...)

It's been a sick, crazy, fun ten year ride but I've had it. TV news scrutiny is in full effect, our station refuses to cover anything poitive, and it's truly brought me down. I cannot show up anywhere without my guard up, whether it's arguing constitutional rights with a$$hole cops, confronting people while rolling about stuff that just doesn't matter, getting yelled at by victim's families, it just isn't worth it anymore.

I've got new prospects on the horizion and I need to grab the reigns.

I've traveled the country for free, seen many tense situations sometimes work themselves out, and sometimes not, shot my favorite teams from the sidelines. I've seen stuff with my own eyes and through the black and white viewfinder that is just amazing.

I'll take what I've learned in news (too much to list here) and apply it in my new endeavors. I think besides learning cameras, lighting and edit systems the one thing I have learned is how to treat people. My people skills have become top notch. We deal with people in these incredibly intimate, usually akward, tense situations and if you can come out of them feeling OK about yourself you've done something right.

So keep fighting the fight, try to bring an ounce of positivity to every pound of negativity, and hopefully this trend of everything being breaking news and trying to scare people comes to an end.

I'll be watching.

PEACE

Hank, I'm sorry to see you go. You sound like one of the good guys, and that's going to be a loss for this business. Good luck in your future endeavors. Let us know when and where you land.

Oh, and don't be a stranger.

Best wishes, Hank. We all have to do what is right for us. And many of us are living proof that there is life beyond the newsroom. Don't be a stranger!

Hank,

When I bolted sports for news 2+ years ago, you said, "local sports loses a workhorse."

We're both a long way from covering NFC playoff games together...and eating steak & shrimp before the Wild games.

For your transition, HS, I say, "local news is losing a workhorse." Well done for the past ten years.

Stay in touch and do stop by next time you're in town.

It's a shame when the business puts up too many hurdles to keep the good ones.

Which brings up the thought -- is the possibility of celebrity or a network job worth the starving, the financial hardship, the relationship issues, the missed holidays, the lack of family time, the health problems, and all the other things we suffer?

Sorry moth - just saw your sig line and had to amend it:

"It takes courage to make it to the top. It takes tenacity to stay there."

...and it takes wisdom to realize when to pick a better mountain.
